How Long Does it Take to Write a Dissertation?

28 Nov 2017

When you enter a Ph.D. or Master’s program, they tell you that writing a dissertation will be easy peasy and that you’ll have lots of time left to produce an amazing one. That’s a lie. It will take up lots of your precious time, and you’ll end up feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. Who wants that? No one!

When a student faces the task of producing a project of this sort, he/she has two options; looking for a dissertation writing service website to do the job for them, or deciding to write it themselves. If you opt for option two, then it’s important that you understand how long it will take you to successfully complete this task. Keep reading to find out.

IT TAKES… HOW LONG?

To make it all simpler, we will be working with milestones. When you’re going to start writing a document of this sort, it’s essential that you set steps and objectives and that you acknowledge how much time it will take you to complete them, for you to work more efficiently. That’s a tip right there. In this article, we’re going to split the dissertation writing process into three significant milestones, which are the following:

  • Selecting your topic.
  • Doing thorough research and discussing the relevant aspects.
  • Explaining how you’ll carry out your study.

If you choose to work with these three and following the instructions we’ll set from top to bottom, you’ll be able to finish your project in about 18 months or less, depending on how fast you work and also how fast you receive responses.

SELECTING YOUR TOPIC (1 MONTH)

The first step is a no-brainer. What you have to do is decide on the topic that you’re going to be investigating, and you must also clarify why it is important and why it should be embraced. This is called a “dissertation proposal”. You need to write this in the most convincing way possible. If you properly plan what your topic will be, and how you’ll sell it, you can have it ready in 30 days.

DOING THOROUGH RESEARCH AND DISCUSSING THE RELEVANT ASPECTS (+5 MONTHS)

The second step consists of doing some research. Look up everything that has been written about your topic and keep an eye on recent research. Teachers always prefer recent sources. You will want to split this step into two. The first part being, reading all of the sources that you find, which can take a minimum of three months, and the second part is, writing a first draft, which ranges typically from 30 to 40 pages, where you discuss what you found. Talk about what concerns you, what others have to say about the topic, what you agree with and what you disagree with, and many other aspects that you consider relevant. Considering the length of this part, you may expect to take a minimum of two months to complete it. Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? If you need any sort of dissertation help, don’t hesitate in asking your teacher.

EXPLAINING HOW YOU’LL CARRY OUT YOUR STUDY (< 1 YEAR)

This is the step that takes the longest. You’ll need to draft a paper explaining how you plan to carry out your study and you will need to justify your approach. It doesn’t have to be long and can normally take you a month to complete. That’s not the end of it though; if you think that this is over, it’s just beginning. Everything you’ve done to this moment, you’ll need to deliver to your committee. Said committee will need to carefully review your draft to suggest some feedback and improvements that can be done for your dissertation proposal to be better. This step can take a minimum of two months, as the people that revise your paper usually take their time. It’s crucial that you do not omit this step because no one gets his or her draft perfect the first time around.

Once your draft is approved, you’ll have to wait for permission to start working, and this can take a few weeks. The next thing you do will depend on the kind of data collecting method you utilize. If you want your participants to complete an online survey, things will be faster, for instance, and you’ll take one month to finish. If on the other hand, you interview people personally, transcribe the interviews, and withdraw your own conclusions, you can expect to take about three months in the process. Then, you will have to analyze your results. If you worked with an online survey, collecting results would be a swift process; you can even do it within a month! Analyzing qualitative data is different, nonetheless, because you will have to notice other aspects that define what you’re trying to prove. This can take another three months.

The next thing you have to do is revise your paper to check that what you’re turning in meets the requirements of your committee and has no mistakes. If you can do this in one or two months, you’ll be all set.
