The media have influenced our country to make society think that unlawful immigrants are terrible people. Society dictates our lives and limits us to what the media wants to believe. Whether it is true or unlawful, every individual should be treated equally. The United States is a country where people are being discriminated against but referred to the “Land of the Free.” There are many reasons why illegal immigrants are not allowed to live in America and it starts with them going through a process to get citizenship, which is a proposal in the U.S. The proposal granted immigrants opportunities while allowing them to live in the United States without fear of deportation. For immigrants to apply for US citizenship, they are to meet requirements such as, language skills, completing an interview with the United States customs, taking an exam, etc. They are to complete these requirements to see how their english is, their knowledge based on the U.S., and why they want to come to America. There were 12 million immigrants from Mexico living in the United States in 2016, and fewer than half of them (45%) were in the country illegally, according to Pew Research Center estimates. Mexico is the country’s largest source of immigrants, making up 26.6% of all U.S. immigrants. People would look at them as if they were coming to America to harm others. That is not the case, they come for better jobs, opportunities, and a better life.
However, not all illegal immigrants play the innocent role. According to the United Nations, 97 percent of the illegal immigrants who enter the U.S. clandestinely do so across the border between the U.S. and Mexico, but only 20 percent of those who cross the border illegally are caught. Also, more than 43,000 illegal immigrants, were convicted of drug offenses. The violent crime category of assault, robbery, sexual assault, and family offenses comes to 12 percent, says a National Executive Committee member. Many have been through the criminal justice system, which inflicted thousands to millions in cost for having nothing to do with the system because of their illegal entry. Illegal immigrants affect the economy in many ways. If they stay in the U.S., they will take jobs away, which is taking away from legal citizens.
