Ready Player One: Oasis
If you think of video games as a solo thing, you couldn't be more wrong. As the pastime has grown and evolved, it's becoming more and more about teamwork, from 4-player teamwork in New Super Mario Bros to call of duty with 6 man teams you have to work with in order to complete an objective. And these teamwork games often form relationships and trust between players. Ready player one has the same principals. At the beginning of the book wade and his friends wanted to all complete the egg solo but as time passes throughout the book they all realize they need each other in order to complete the egg.
And throughout the hunt they become closer form new relationships and intrust in one another with knowledge of the egg, items, and secrets. The characters in this book use this revolutionary technology called the OASIS. This console is a hyper-realistic, 3D, video game paradise. It's 2045, and pretty much everyone logs in to the OASIS daily to escape their terrible lives.
This technology is what helped out main characters in the book develop a positive relationship with each other. When wade meets Art3mis for the first time he narrated that, ??I'd never had such a powerful, immediate connection with another human being before. Not even with Aech.??(chapter 17 pg 174). As of now in the story Wade and Art3mis have never met in person seen each others faces but they have developed a strong relationship together and established trust. While despite being competitors in the high stakes hunt for Halliday's easter egg, the fact that Wade still feels intimate about his relationship with Art3mis is symbolic of the power of human affection irreplicable even in the OASIS. The novel opens with a large emphasis on Wade's friendship with Aech. Perhaps the strangest part of this friendship is very easily overlooked; they only know each other's avatars, and have never met. Wade had this same connection with Art3mis in the novel ""As we continued to talk, going through the motions of getting to know each other, I realized that we already did know each other, as well as any two people could. We'd known each other for years, in the most intimate way possible. We'd connected on a purely mental level.
I understood her, trusted her, and loved her as a dear friend. None of that had changed, or could be changed by anything as inconsequential as her gender, or skin color, or sexual orientation."" (chapter 32 pg 321). Wade had a real trust for Art3mis and Aech he actually formed a strong bond with none of them ever meeting, seeing each other or knowing each other real name.A sense of teamwork is presented throughout the entire novel, but the true purpose of teamwork only becomes apparent at the end. To unlock the third gate, it takes three, all with keys. Without any companions, the quest cannot be completed. ?? I took out my copy of the crystal key and held it up. Aech and Atr3mis followed suit and held up their keys too. Nothing happened. We all exchanged concerned looks. Then an idea occurred to me, and i cleared my throat. ????Three is a magic number,???? .... As soon as i spoke the words, the crystal door began to glow, and two additional keyholes appeared, on either side of the first.??(chapter 35 pg 342). The last gate to obtain billions of dollars and the OASIS needed two other people to be there with you to open that gate.
This shows the importance of building a relationship within the OASIS like wade did with Aech and Art3mis, any other player that wanted to complete the egg solo would have not been able to get pass this step without friends. All the friendships and relationships within this novel are formed within the OASIS, a virtual reality. Yet they seem to be genuine relationships that we are capable of forming in the real world; Shoto and Daito even describe their avatars as brothers. ?? Daito??s real name was Toshiro Yoshiaki. I didn't even know that until last night, when i saw it on the news.????but...... i thought you were brother??? id always assumed that daito and shoto lived together. That they shared an apartment or something. ??""my relationship with Daito is hard to explain.?? he stopped to clear his throat. We were not brothers, not in real life. Just in the OASIS. Do you understand? We only knew each other online. I never actually met him. (chapter 25 pg 243). These genuine friendships are perhaps able to form because they base a connection on the only certainty within the OASIS, personality.
