How it works

I already knew the LGBT were discriminated against. What was startling to me were the maps Granderson pulled up, giving visual to the states that have laws protecting LGBT people, more importantly, that most states do not. I guess I never thought about the fact that without specific laws protecting LGBT American's, there is no protection against being fired, evicted from housing, and being disqualified to adopt. I think I based LGBT issues on what is reported in media, which has been mostly marriage rights, serving in the armed services, and hate crimes.

Granderson did an amazing job at showing how ridiculous stereotypes and the inconsistencies that LGBT people face are.

By using his own life to explain the “gay lifestyle”, he showed there is nothing different about his lifestyle than a person who isn’t gay. Everyone has heard of the “gay agenda”, Granderson (2012) pointed out that all LGBT people want is the same rights as what the U.S. Constitution grants every American.

Granderson spoke about being a parent, I feel strongly that having a child should not be based on being able to have a child the traditional way, instead it should be based on a person’s ability to raise a child. All a child needs is a loving, caring, and trusting parent, they do not care about sexual orientation. I chose to explore the resources on adoption from the Human Rights Campaign website. There was a lot of resources on adoption and fostering children, for families wanting to or who already have.

There were also many links that were about children in the foster care system who are LGBTQ. The thing that stuck out to me was “LGBTQ youth are over-represented in the foster care system, many LGBTQ youth have the added layer of trauma that comes with being rejected or mistreated because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression”.

It is a large issue and agencies placing these children, need to be aware of and make sure that they are placed in loving supportive homes. LGBT people face many obstacles when trying to adopt or foster, this should not be the case when their are so many children needing loving homes.
