“March 10 is an important day in history. It was the day a soldier became a general, the day a slave was free, the day an assassin was born, and it was the day an invention succeeded. If these days did not happen, then slaves would not have rights yet or the phone would not have been invented. Life could have changed.

Ulysses S. Grant was born at Point Pleasant, Ohio, U.S., on April 27, 1822. Grant was a commander of the Union armies during his late years (1864-1865). After the Civil War Grant became president of the U.S. from 1869-1877. Grant was the son of Jesse Root Grant. Jesse grew up in Georgetown, Ohio. In 1839, Jesse had secured an appointment for Ulysses to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York (Simon).

In 1838, Grant ranked 21st in his class of 39. In 1843, Grant graduated from West Point, where he was a skilled horseman and a great student (Simon). In 1844, he met Julia Dent, the sister of one of his West Point classmates and the daughter of a merchant. after the Mexican-American War, Grant returned to Missouri to marry Julia in August 1848. Grant and Julia had four children.

In 1860 Grant’s family moved to Gallina, Illinois, where Grant worked his father’s leather business. Then the Civil War began in April 1861, Grant became Colonel of the 21st Illinois volunteers. During that summer on March 10, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln made Grant a general. On February 1862, Grant’s first major victory came when his troops captured Fort Donelson in Tennessee. On July 1863, Grant’s forces captured Vicksburg, Mississippi, a Confederate stronghold. On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered, ending the Civil War.

In 1821 through 1875, Grant won the election margin and received more than 52% of the popular vote at age 46. On July 5, 1852, the 4th Infantry sailed from New York to the Pacific coast Grant left his growing family (two sons have been born) behind. On July 23, 1885, Ulysses S. Grant died (“Ulysses S. Grant”).

Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847, at Edinburgh, Scotland. Bell invented the telephone in 1876 and upgraded the phonograph. Alexander Graham Bell was eleven when he entered the Royal High School at Edinburgh (HochFelder). he did not enjoy the compulsory curriculum, so he left school at the age of fifteen without graduating. In 1865, his family moved to London. Alexander passed the entrance examinations, so he could go to the University College in London in June 1868. he did not complete his studies because in 1870, the family moved again (“Alexander Graham Bell”). after his brothers Edward in Melville died they went to Canada.

James Earl Ray was born in 1928, on March 10 in Alton, Illinois (“James Earl Ray”). in Memphis on April 4, 1868, Ray shot Martin Luther King Jr. The location Ray shot from was, the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel. The manhunt lasted more than two months. The FBI went to five counties until they found Ray. It was said to be the FBI’s most expensive and hardest mystery to solve in history (“ The Manhunt For James Earl Ray”).

The reason why James Earl Ray killed Martin Luther King Jr. Is that James Earl Ray was racist and noticed that Martin Luther King Jr was black. Ray thought He’s trying to make black and white even. Ray killed King before King could try to do anymore. Then James Earl Ray confessed that he killed Martin Luther King Jr. and went to prison. Ray died in prison on April 23, 1989 in Nashville, Tennessee (“James Earl Ray”). As one killer is killed another hero is born.

Harriet Tubman’s birthday is unknown, in 1849, Tubman escaped from slavery. Tubman was also the famous “conductor” of the Underground Railroad. Harriet Tubman risked her life to save millions of slaves. During the Civil War Harriet Tubman was a spy for the Union Army.

In 1849, an unknown illness killed her owner. When she escaped, her brothers came with her until the Cambridge Democrat offered $300 for a reward for the slaves named Harriet, Harry, and Ben. Harriet Tubman died on March 10, 1913, because of brain damage during the time she was a slave. Harriet Tubman was buried by military forces at Fort Hill. In conclusion, march 10 is an important date in history. There are many important date that teach us about the way the world used to be. These events teach us lessons.”
