Gun Control is not the Answer
There is no need for gun control because really not that many people are killed by guns. “Americans were 21.5 times more likely to die of heart disease; 18.7 times more likely to die of malignant tumors; and 2.4 times more likely to die of diabetes or 2.3 times more likely to die of Alzheimer's than to die from a firearm” (Gun Control - ProCon.org.). America's widespread gun culture stems in part from its colonial history, revolutionary roots, frontier expansion, and the Second Amendment.
Gun control goes against the concept of a democracy that allows the people the right to defend themselves. The reasons that I think gun control is unnecessary is because gun control laws violate the right to self-defense and deny people a sense of safety. Also gun control laws will not stop criminals from getting guns or breaking laws. Lastly, education about guns and gun safety is needed to stop gun deaths.
The first reason that we should not have gun control is that it violates the right to self defense. “Nelson Lund, JD, PhD, Professor at George Mason University School of Law, stated, "The right to self-defense and to the means of defending oneself is a basic natural right that grows out of the right to life" and "many [gun control laws] interfere with the ability of law-abiding citizens to defend themselves against violent criminals" (Nelson Lund). Criminals are more likely to avoid crimes if they know that the person they were going to act upon was armed. Where they would most likely commit a crime would be a gun free zone where nobody can defend themselves. Therefore this proves my reasoning on self defense.
The second reason that we should not have gun control because Gun control laws will not prevent criminals from getting the guns or breaking laws. “Despite Chicago's ban on gun shops, shooting ranges, assault weapons, and high capacity magazines, in 2014 Chicago had 2,089 shooting victims including at least 390 murders. Approximately 50,000 guns were recovered by police in Chicago between 2001 and Mar. 2012. The guns came from all 50 states, and more than half came from outside of Illinois.” (Chicago Tribune). Gun laws would stop a felon or criminal from going into a store and purchasing a firearm. But instead, how they get them is from stealing the firearms from the ones who are able to get a gun legally. Then they turn around and sell the stolen firearms to others. Criminals will always be able to obtain guns illegally somehow or someway.
