Change of Major: from Engineering to Psychology
Choosing a major is one of the most significant decisions a student makes during their academic journey. Initially, it seems like a straightforward choice based on one's interests and potential career aspirations. However, as students delve deeper into their coursework, they often discover that their initial choice does not align with their evolving interests or career goals. This realization prompts many students to consider changing their major, a decision that should not be taken lightly. In this essay, I will discuss why I decided to change my major from Engineering to Psychology, highlighting the key factors that influenced my decision.
My journey underscores the importance of aligning one's academic pursuits with personal passions and long-term career objectives.
My initial decision to major in Engineering was heavily influenced by societal expectations and the perceived stability of a career in the field. Growing up, I was always told that pursuing a career in Engineering would guarantee job security and financial stability. Additionally, I had a natural aptitude for mathematics and science, which seemed to further validate my decision. However, as I progressed through my Engineering courses, I began to feel a disconnect between my academic work and my personal interests. While I found the technical aspects of Engineering intellectually stimulating, I lacked a genuine passion for the subject. This lack of enthusiasm became increasingly apparent in my sophomore year when I began to dread attending classes and completing assignments. I realized that despite my proficiency in the subject, Engineering was not a field I saw myself thriving in long-term.
During this time of introspection, I found myself gravitating towards Psychology courses as electives. The subject matter resonated with me on a deeper level, as I was fascinated by the complexities of human behavior and the mind. Unlike my Engineering courses, Psychology lectures and assignments captivated my interest and sparked a genuine curiosity to learn more. I was particularly drawn to topics such as cognitive development, mental health, and social psychology, which seemed not only relevant but also personally fulfilling. This newfound passion for Psychology led me to seek out opportunities to engage with the field outside of the classroom. I joined the university's Psychology club, attended seminars, and even volunteered at a local mental health clinic. These experiences further solidified my interest in pursuing a career in Psychology, prompting me to seriously consider changing my major.
After much contemplation and discussions with academic advisors, I made the decision to change my major from Engineering to Psychology. This decision was not made lightly, as it involved leaving behind a field that I had invested considerable time and effort into. However, I am confident that this change aligns better with my personal interests and career aspirations. By pursuing a degree in Psychology, I am opening doors to a variety of career paths that I find both challenging and rewarding. Moreover, this decision has reinvigorated my passion for learning and has given me a clearer sense of purpose in my academic journey. Ultimately, changing my major has taught me the importance of being true to oneself and pursuing a path that aligns with one's passion and values. As I move forward in my studies, I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and am committed to making a meaningful impact in the field of Psychology. This experience has reaffirmed my belief that it is never too late to change course and pursue a path that truly resonates with who you are.
