The on Holistic Nursing
When I was the first to walk into Mrs. Amanda Kings studio, I had a roller coaster of emotion thinking about what I was getting into. I didn’t know if I was getting a traditional massage or an experience I have never felt before. When I walked into her studio the first thing that came to mind was safety; I felt safe and warm and protected from the wrong in the world. It was so homy, and I felt like I could tell her anything and not have to worry about the stress in my life.
The waiting room was small with a few chairs and a place to put your shoes and a desk with a lamp and candy. When I walked into the room the lights were calm and dim making me feel relaxed; there was a bed in the middle of the room covered in white sheets and a rolling stool. There was another office in the back, and the soft white walls with the dark brown bookshelves gave it a powerful feeling.
Before the session started, she asked me if I had any prior injuries and I told her about the torn ligaments in my shoulder. Next, she asked me how I wanted to feel when I was done the treatment. I said her I am a very stressful person and it is a bad habit of mine that I have been trying to work on and thought by choosing zero balancing it would help. Throughout the session, the room was silent just the soft sound of Amanda’s voice asking if I was comfortable and I was caught in a trance. I felt the weight come off my shoulders and sank so deep into the bed I thought I was floating. My eyes were closed the whole time feeling her fingers press softly on me loosing up all the tension in my body.
To end the session she told me just to lay on the bed until I was ready to get up, but I would never be prepared my body felt so loose, energized, and relaxed all at the same time it was such a beautiful state to be in. Once I got up she then asked me how I was feeling, I was speechless I didn’t even know how to put that feeling into words I felt like I was floating in the air without a worry in the world I finally felt like myself no stress or anything on my mind I was just in the present moment enjoying it. She then had me walk back and forth a few times to get my legs back under me, and I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many times I did it I was lost in the moment and the feeling. As I proceed on with the rest of my day, I felt more intact with myself and felt calmer and at ease. I felt as if I wasn’t rushed and had more energy throughout the rest of the day.
I no longer felt the weight on my shoulders or aches in my body, but instead, I felt rested and more energized. Lastly, I noticed that I got a great night sleep and woke up feeling much more refreshed. Before the session started during the interview with Amanda, she talked about the goal of how we should feel after the experience and some of the history of zero balancing. Zero balancing classes are offered throughout the united states, Europe, and New Zealand, once someone is certified in zero balancing they are allowed to teach and practice it. To be certified in zero balancing you must take 100 hours of classes, four workshops, written exam, and a hands-on exam. The last part to entirely be able to be hands-on with people you must have prior experience of being a nurse or a masseuse. There are 600 people in the world today practicing zero balancing.
It has taken Amanda 4 years to be where he is today with all the schooling and start of her own zero balancing studio. She talked about how she sees a wide variety of patients in age, and they all come in for many different needs. In the end, though they all seek the same feeling of relaxation and re-energized, most people attend zero balancing sessions multiple times a week. Amanda also goes into general electric to do zero balancing there to help some injured workers; she says the zero balancing is really on the rise especially with many companies starting to become interested in having a professional on hand in the business. To receive zero balancing the person must be in good health to be able to get the treatment.
She describes zero balancing as a form of meditation and how it helps some get into a whole other state of consciousness. Zero balancing was founded by Fritz Smith in the early 1970s and was created in California and now spreading rapidly. It got its name “Zero Balancing” from after one session the person receiving treatment stated they felt as if they were “brought into balance”. Smith Traveled across the United States and the United Kingdom looking to study the human body and the connection with the energy that runs through it. Smith soon discovered throughout his research that “In Zero Balancing both the energy and structure are engaged simultaneously through skilled touch to bring about profound healing and amplified wellness”.
Smith has been now practicing throughout the world for more than thirty-five years. Zero balancing is a “powerful body-mind therapy that uses skilled touch to address the relationship between energy and the structures of the body”. Zero balancing uses the pressure from the person’s fingers to loosen up key joints; a typical session can last from 30 minutes to an hour. People use zero balancing to help clear the bodies energy flow and many other things such as help relieve stress, anxiety, help with posture, and also pains and aches. Lastly, at the end of a zero balancing session, the person receiving treatment is meant to feel “Inner harmony and organization”. Leaving a zero balancing session one should feel in touch with their soul and body.
After learning the history of Zero Balancing and speaking with Amanda, I still had this one question of how Zero Balancing affected the energy in my body to change my mood. As I was looking through the Holistic Nursing text, my question was soon answered. I learned that aura could be damaged by many different factors; this leads to physical, emotional, and social problems. I feel my energy was so far down from all the wear and tear I put on my body throughout the years and never getting it treated appropriately. Also in the text, it said “Zero Balancing can help lead to relief of these problems… and increase energy, peace, and eventually a deeper relationship with yourself and loved ones” (Holistic Nursing, 2013, p. 754). This made it clear to me how powerful Zero Balancing is with how it can not only affect someone’s mood but change the energy within them.
