How it works

Motivation

While doing school work at home you began to lose focus by thinking about television shows you want to watch as you are distracted yourself from being able to focus. And as you return to work and realized that you wasted your time distracting yourself (Sicinski, 2018). And you do not feel motivated at all. And you asked yourself, “How can I get motivated without feeling not as motivated?” (Ackerman, 2018). In order to be motivated is to get your tasks done. Even though the reason for feeling not as motivated is because you are not willing to complete the task. Instead you prefer to procrastinate as a method to avoid finishing the tasks (Hamm, 2017). The terms that will be covered is more about motivation in Psychology, and the terms such as motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, motivational shift, drive reduction theory, and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and the fixed and growth mindset.

The origin of motivation came from Latin for, “movere” and “motus” to move. Motivation means when you make time that is worthwhile, pleasant, and satisfying. For example, if you find a job you love and that makes you happy the job would not be a lot of stress and work for the employee (Daniel & Esser, 1980;1972;1999) (Daniel & Esser, 1980;1972;1999)

The next term I will be discussing is intrinsic motivation this word is interesting. Because it allows the person to feel accomplished when achieving their goals. Intrinsic motivation means they come from your feelings than rewarding yourself. Why? If you remember learning how feelings is one of the six sensations. Human emotions and feelings are completely separate from each other. An example of intrinsic motivation is asking yourself, “Why am I in college for? And do you still enjoy learning yourself? “ (College, 1999-2018). This is a good question to ask college or university students regarding their education and how they are doing well. Because if some students are intrinsically motivated by being able to accomplish anything they feel a lot of self-worth.

Self-Efficacy

Another term and issue I want to discuss more are self-efficacy. Self-efficacy means when you have belief in your own abilities or believing you can do anything by having the motivation. For example,” think about why you are in college. Are you in college to learn and gain knowledge? Then you are intrinsically motivated. If you are in college to get a stable job or doing it for the sake of finding out what your future holds you are considered to be extrinsically motivated” (College, 10.1 Motivation, 2004).

Motivational Shift

The next term I will be discussing is motivational shift this is often associated with people’s motivation changing every single time they are motivated. Motivational shift is when you feel motivated about putting your time and effort you put into, and as you change overtime that motivation is lost. Because without putting into your time and your best work you would feel apathy. Which is the unwillingness to put in any of your best work and time into something you feel motivated. For example, “studies show that intrinsic motivation increases when they are harmless against extrinsic reinforcements. This show that you are being able to praise someone by increasing their intrinsic motivation by having the motivation to accomplish anything they can” (Arnold & Pierce, 2014). Another example of intrinsic motivation is detailed and hard tasks, suggestions to achieve your goal are much more likely to have higher performance (Robbins, 2001). This demonstrates when you accomplish a task by tackling only the most challenging tasks by breaking them down. When you have accomplished most of your tasks the individual is most likely to feel intrinsically motivated. In comparison to extrinsic motivation you get rewarded when you accomplish a task yourself by giving yourself rewards like self-care.

Drive Reduction Theory

The drive reduction theory helps us satisfies our needs like our need for water, food, and much more than food and water. Which are the primary drives of the drive reduction theory, while secondary drives are meant for full filling our needs. Like the need for money which is something everyone needs to be emotionally stable. Because now these days a lot of people are working at their jobs to make money. Which is what everyone needs and ability to pay for the bills or material items we buy. The drive reduction theory allows humans to full-fill our needs like the need to be stable.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow has this pyramid which are organized into five sections which works their way up from physiological needs to self-actualization. This is not something that anyone has to necessarily follow since this pyramid shows what everyone would need to be emotionally stable, happy, confident, and optimistic. Physiologically people need water, sleep, food, and the need to make love. The next one is the need to be safe and secure everyone needs security in their life whether if it is financially or emotional stability. Because we all have something to share in common as humans is our flaws which makes us not secure. For example, “Maslow recommends his hierarchy of needs is active, and going on for a while and there is a small chance that individuals are likely to achieve the self-actualization state” (Francis & Kritsonis, 2006;1943). Which is the last step of Maslow’s theory of hierarchy of needs, this last step means you must full-fill your needs in order to be successful like accomplishing your goals or full-filling your dreams. Individuals are often successful when they feel accomplished after a goal they are capable of handling a goal by taking steps to achieve their goal, which are key to self-fulfilling your needs.

Issues with Motivation

In some days there will be times most individuals will lose hope for any other reason. Sometimes motivation becomes helpless and an on-going issue in the real world. When we want something badly enough we must have the determination to move of forward even if trying to engage in activities. Determination is not old fashion people often forgets which are key to being motivated. Since there are a ton of ways to get motivated depending what you are seeking. For example, “Odessa lost her motivation for baking which resulted in making delicious sweets whenever she has available time to bake” (al., 1999). This show that she has an issue with trying to stay motivated by doing something enjoyable like baking her favorite sweets. In Psychology motivation is a topic that most people brings up these days, when we have to finish or start a task the last minute or day of work. Which is often common among students who are enrolling in school, and the issue with students trying to get motivated is their need for knowledge. Instead of cramming on studying or working on their homework assignment all night, students can break down their difficult tasks into chunks. And only finish some of their work when they head to class the next day at school. Apathy is also another term that is not often discussed much whenever it comes to motivation. Apathy means when you are not willing to do an activity, probably take no interest in discussing about a person, and object.

The difference between apathy and motivation which they both share is not willing to do anything or do nothing. Apathy and loss of motivation is often cause by loss of interest and enthusiasm. Sometimes apathy is often associated with depression. Issues with motivation among humans often lacks sense of willingness to do anything such as doing what must be done instead of doing the last moment. Even if we cannot do anything individuals should at least done some work so they have something to finish without doing their work the last day or moments before something is due.
