The Strong Points of Churchill in the Ghosts of 9-11, an Essay by Ward Churchill

On September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda-an Islamic terrorist group who considers United States citizens freedoms evil and doesn’t want citizens to migrate out of the United States-hijacked four United States planes and smacked them right into The Pentagon and the Twin Towers. This event killed about 5,000 people, but scarred many more. Ward Churchill the author of The Ghosts of 9-1-1-exemplifies how what happened is no one’s fault but our own. Harshly, Churchill states his case that the United States was the ones to provoke such an act. Ward Churchill is an American author and as political activist. Churchill’s work brought so much attention because it is controversial and very confrontational. His other work like, “On the Justice of Roosting Chickens, drew a lot of attention and his reasoning in this essay and the other essay caused conflict for everyone, since everyone’s beliefs were different they all wanted to argue their own reasons. In The Ghosts of 9-1-1, Churchill has a very valid point of blaming us for what happened on September 11, 2001. The way Churchill approached this argument is sort of shocking because he is a writer and political activist, but his point that 9/11 was certainly our fault and provoked by the United States is extremely valid.

Prior to September 11, 2001, Al Qaeda was manifesting the attack for sometime. Osama Bin Laden didn’t just wake up one day and decide they wanted to attack the United States there was a series of events that lead to it. It is stated in the article, “Claims that average Americans “didn’t know” what was being done in their name are thus rather less than credible,” which is a complete lie and embarrassment for an excuse. By 2001 multiple genocides have occurred that were brought to attention where everyone yawned and were more interested in cell phones and the stock market. Churchill clarifies it in his paper that Americans turned away from what was brought to our attention and yawned because they were more interested in mastering a perfect cappuccino than war. The United States has even made it clear that they don’t have friends; they have interests, meaning that they don’t care about being friends with other countries they just want to make sure that mass killings aren’t happening. The US was bombing Iraq and important things in Iraq like water purification or pharmacies to make sure that no one in Iraq could get the help they needed to survive. We killed innocent children and helped them get sicker with no intention of it. The US even went out of their way to ensure that nothing could be repaired in Iraq and they would all suffer and die. No one worries about something so serious because it is believed that if someone else sees it, they will do something about it and then it just continues so that it is ignored until things progressively get worse which aids the reasoning for why the United States was attacked.

Another strong point that Churchill raises to the surface is how the US is so upset that we lost 5,000 people because Al Qaeda was so furious with us, but we were so spiteful to bomb their civilians and important sites that they lost about 1.3 million and we aren’t as concerned about that as we are our 5,000. During all the wars, the US had such powerful weapons and very strong soldiers that when we fought we killed many people. The headlines after 9/11 stating, “why do they hate us so much?” from Americans because this attack was “unprovoked” even though we pushed Iraq to their limits. Iraq wasn’t the only wrongdoing we had. Three million Indochinese were exterminated during our assaults on Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia? Then there were thousands massacred by US troops in Korea that were burned alive by our Air Corps. The innocent victims that got caught in the crossfire ombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki and it only goes on from there. As much as our civilians are true to the flag and honor our country, we are not innocent and this was not unprovoked. We of course never wanted to kill the people that we killed, but because of the ugly term, war, we killed innocent people making 9/11 valid. We bombed their sanitation and medical help making it impossible to survive in Iraq, they hate us because of everything we have done to them first.

The United States has and always had the resources we needed to win wars. We are so extremely powerful, maybe too powerful for our own good, which is why 9/11 happened to us. When we attack we do it to protect our country and it’s security for us, but when the United States is attacked or threatened by another county it’s considered a terrorist attack. The statement was made that, “The United States doesn’t have friends, we have interests,” which translates for me that no matter what country is in war or struggling we aren’t their friend. This is taken positively and negatively. If a country is in trouble we can stick our hand in because we aren’t their friend so no one can get mad at us, we are just interested in not letting unyone get hurt. In a negative way, we also can fight with anyone because it Isn’t a factor that is too important to us,

Americans need to be more open and aware of what is going on around them, I think it’s important for our generation to familiarize themselves with the previous and current genocides that happened and continue to happen, and also the wars and other events leading up to muss killings. We now call events like this history when it should have been prevented. This topic is so touchy that not many people suve a perspective like this on it, so when Churchill did he got a lot of negative feedback. Churchill said everything right just the tone he used was a little nasty and is what set off all the negative feedback. Clearly both parties was wrong in what happened before and on September 11, 2001, but we can only take it and move forward and learn from it because the United States was not innocent as much as we’d like to believe. I do believe that since he is an author he could have approached this argument many different ways to get more people on board with him because his argument is valid, he just offended too many people with the way he went about writing this.
