Gym class has to be one of the best classes to have in school. Almost everyone loves it. You don't really do any work and it even helps us perform better in other classes, while also providing some type of daily exercise. It's crucial, however, to keep the number of injuries to a minimum. Some practices or rules we can implement for safer gameplay include wearing the right gear, taking breaks, and never playing through pain.
One of the best ways to avoid injury is by wearing the right gym clothes.
Sports shoes, for example, are essential, especially in gym class. They must be sturdy and in good condition as worn-out sports shoes won't protect your feet during gym activities. Sportswear is also important because it absorbs sweat better than regular clothes and offers flexibility for movement. You don't have to worry about your clothes ripping while in the gym, thanks to the flexibility of sportswear. Typical sport-specific garments include tracksuits, shorts, and T-shirts.
It's vital to take breaks during a game in gym class. However, it's not advisable to take excessively long breaks. You must recover between sets and workouts, but ensure the breaks aren't too long. While resting between sets is necessary, too much rest can have a negative impact. Excessively long breaks decrease your heart rate, hindering your body from refuelling your muscles. Over-exercising or participating in too much high-intensity exercise can lead to depression, fatigue, restlessness, and poor performance. Rest and eating are times when the body gets to work repairing tissue damage, strengthening the heart and muscles, restoring depleted fuel reserves, and improving oxygen transport throughout the body, thereby becoming more efficient and stronger than before.
Most importantly, don't ever play through pain. For instance, continuing to play after suffering a concussion can cause further damage and prolong recovery time. Doctors, trainers, and most coaches know that playing through a sports injury can cause damage that keeps you on the bench longer, and might even end your sports career entirely. Returning to play too soon after a concussion increases your risk of serious brain injury. Many athletes do play through injuries, which might lead them to see their body as something to battle against. Their dedication is understandable; they have everything riding on their athletic abilities. If the injury won't end their career, they may risk their health for the reward.
As gym teachers, it's our job to ensure that students sustain as few injuries as possible. By following these rules, we can potentially decrease the incident rate and create a safer environment. Thus, the key practices for safer gameplay are wearing the right gear, taking breaks, and not playing through pain.
