Reasons why Same-Sex Marriage should be Legalized

Same-sex marriage is one controversial issue that has gained much attention in the past in the United States and all across the world. Like many other subjects, this is a topic that has not only gained attention from the international community but has also gained opposition and support. As more research is conducted and the information is assessed, the society has highlighted the argument that the opposition of same-sex marriage is flawed and there is no reasoning to not legalize same-sex marriage.

Indeed, when we examine the key reasons why same-sex marriage should be legalized, we find compelling evidence from both social and economic perspectives. The transformation of public opinion on this issue reflects a deeper understanding of human rights and family values in our modern society.

First, same-sex marriage produces a healthy home environment. Same-sex couples are keen on having their own families, and it is a key for increasing adoption of children in the foster care system. As per a survey conducted nearly 19% of same-sex couples adopted children in 2009, which was up by 8% in 2000 (Tavernise, 2011). A rise in adoption rates means more children have parents to love and care for them rather than living in foster care moving from one home to another. In fact, same sex parents tend to be more motivated, more committed than heterosexual parents, because they chose to be parents. Besides, children raised in same-sex households may have a better ability to overcome huge obstacles, stand firm in the face of adversity, and make decisions based on emotion and love rather than firm facts. These resilient families demonstrate one of the strongest reasons why same-sex marriage should be legalized - their commitment to creating loving, stable homes. For instance, my colleague's friends, a same-sex couple, adopted two siblings who had been separated in different foster homes, reuniting them and providing the stable, nurturing environment they desperately needed. If same-sex marriage is legalized across the country, they will help increase the number of adopted children and help build a better future for children, creating more healthy families in society.

Secondly, Same-sex marriage should be legalized because it boosts the economy for both the private and public sector. Same-sex couples or members of the LGBT community wish to marry just like other couples, but marriage ceremonies entail a significant expense — that means, "more weddings mean more money". In New York for instance, nearly 260 million dollars was added into the economy in the year immediately following the legalization of same sex marriage**, and** it also affects tourism by attracting gay couples from states that do not allow same-sex marriage to stage the wedding in this state (Anderson, 2017). This economic boost represents another compelling reason why same-sex marriage should be legalized. Beyond the wedding industry, there are broader financial implications. Same-sex marriage will increase income taxes for the State. Same-sex couples can fill out returns as married filing jointly in states with income taxes, some of the new married couples could see their taxes go up as their combined incomes push them into higher tax brackets. For example, Williams Institute researchers estimate that more than 23,000 couples will marry during the first three years of legal same-sex marriage in Texas, providing the Lone Star treasury with nearly $15 million in tax revenue on total wedding spending of almost $182 million (Madhami, 2018). These numbers aren't just statistics — they represent thousands of celebrations, jobs created in the wedding industry, and increased revenue for local businesses. Generally, more wedding business will be good not only for the happy couples, but for the states' economies and tax collectors.

Finally, Same-sex marriage should be legalized because it promotes equality for everyone. Equality means making the same choices available to anyone, in other words, equality is human rights. Same-sex couples are also legal citizens and members of society, so they should have every right and benefits enjoyed by heterosexual married couples. For example, nearly all-homosexual couples did not have any access or benefits to hospitalization; if there was an emergency situation, a person of the same sex was not allowed to visit their partner. The main reason behind this was because they were not officially and legally married. In fact, no government has the right to deny marriage between two individuals who care and love each other, for to do so is to infringe upon their fundamental rights.
These basic rights - from hospital visitation to inheritance - represent crucial reasons why same-sex marriage should be legalized. Consider a real-life scenario: during medical emergencies, unmarried partners often face heartbreaking barriers to being with their loved ones simply because their relationship lacks legal recognition.

Furthermore, equality for same-sex couples reduces racial discrimination and decreases rates of psychological distress in society. According to Anderson, "A US study surveyed nearly 36,000 people between 18-70 years old and found that bisexuals, gays, and lesbians were less psychologically pressurized if they were recognized legally for same-sex marriage. Hence if legalization of same-sex marriage leads to a decline in the overall health disparity and concerns in the LGBTQ community and heterosexuals, then same-sex marriage should be legalized across the world" (Anderson 2017). The psychological well-being of millions depends on this recognition - isn't it time we acknowledged this fundamental truth? As shown, the ban on same-sex couples marrying is unacceptable.

Same-sex marriages should be legalized because it provides a new meaning to marriage and supports the position of people belonging to the LGBTQ community. It enables a healthy family system as same-sex couples adopt more children, it can improve the economy, and it gives them equal rights in the society that have been missing for many decades. Looking at all these reasons why same-sex marriage should be legalized - from creating loving homes for adopted children to boosting local economies, and most importantly, ensuring fundamental human rights - we can see that this change is both necessary and beneficial for our society as a whole. Rather than asking why we should legalize same-sex marriage, perhaps the better question is: how much longer can we justify denying these basic rights? It is important that governments across the world recognize the importance of same-sex marriage and legalize it.
