Global Warming – our Duty and Responsibility

Mr. President, it has been demonstrated and said several times that you do not believe in global warming. The most recent demonstration was your decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement and stop payment to the U.N.

global warming programs. By making this decision, it makes an impact on how the country views climate change. As head and commander of the United States, you should reconsider being on board with the Paris climate agreement to benefit everyone long-term. With many followers and people actively listening to what you say, you should lead my example and contribute to reducing the effects of global warming. The majority of people are convinced global warming is real while others are unsure or uneducated about the topic. I will introduce some information on global warming and its realistic existence. Furthermore, will also discuss the policies that are in place and how we as a nation can contribute and enforce these new changes. After the information is presented Mr. President, I hope you can acknowledge that global warming exists and help enforce policies to combat climate change.

For starters, what is global warming? Global warming is defined as a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. What does this mean? In simpler terms, it means that our planet is heating up at a rapid speed, which causes our glaciers to melt thus increasing the rising of sea levels. It causes our weathers to be more severe and devastating. We have seen an increase in damages left behind by Mother Nature with earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and tornadoes. Dramatic changes are occurring around the world because of climate change. Some examples are changing seasons, destruction of coral reefs, melting ice, more frequent intense heat waves, increase in wildfires, severe droughts in some areas. It is not something we can ignore and turn our back on.

Global warming is a chain reaction that we, humans have caused. It is not something that just happened to the planet, as inhibitors we have mistreated our planet and caused these devastating results, not only to ourselves but to all the creatures inhabiting the planet as well. It is our service responsibility to help combat global warming for the future generations that will have to live on this planet. We have to think of not just ourselves but of others. Here are some more interesting facts about global warming. According to the United Nations website, Thanks to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change we know that from 1880 to 2012, average global temperature increased by 0.85°C. To put this into perspective, for each 1 degree of temperature increase, grain yields decline by about 5 per cent. Maize, wheat and other major crops have experienced significant yield reductions at the global level of 40 megatons per year between 1981 and 2002 due to a warmer climate. Oceans have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished and sea level has risen. From 1901 to 2010, the global average sea level rose by 19 cm as oceans expanded due to warming and ice melted. The Arctic’s sea ice extent has shrunk in every successive decade since 1979, with 1.07 million km ? of ice loss every decade. Given current concentrations and on-going emissions of greenhouse gases, it is likely that by the end of this century, the increase in global temperature will exceed 1.5°C compared to 1850 to 1900 for all but one scenario. The world’s oceans will warm and ice melt will continue. Average sea level rise is predicted as 24 30cm by 2065 and 40-63cm by 2100. Most aspects of climate change will persist for many centuries even if emissions are stopped. Global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) have increased by almost 50 per cent since 1990. Emissions grew more quickly between 2000 and 2010 than in each of the three previous decades. It is still possible, using a wide array of technological measures and changes in behavior, to limit the increase in global mean temperature to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Major institutional and technological change will give a better than even chance that global warming will not exceed this threshold. Without action, the world’s average surface temperature is likely to surpass 3 degrees centigrade this century. The poorest and most vulnerable people are being affected the most.

Global warming affects each and every one of us. It is our duty and responsibility to help reduce climate change. We as individuals have the power to make a difference in the development of global warming. We need to build a better future for our planet. Here are some things that we can do to help the planet. We can demand to reduce the use of fossil fuels by using energy wisely. Burning fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, oil, and gasoline rises the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect and global warming. Another thing we can easily do is to recycle. We can also walk or ride a bike to save on gasoline. Turn off our electronic when we are not using them, including lights. Planting a tree helps because they produce oxygen for us. One policy that we can enforce is to get rid of all plastic items. Especially bags used inside the stores that only end up in our oceans. These are some examples of what we can do to combat global warming Mr. President. I hope you can encourage others to help out our planet and shine some light on this very important topic.
