The Whirlwind of Emotion: Crushes in High School

From The Notebook to The Fault in Our Stars to Me Before You, romance movies are notorious for their touching plots, emotional moments, and heartwarming feel. The Netflix original, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, adapted from the novel by Jenny Han, perfectly displays these characteristics of a great romance movie.

Many teenage girls know what it is like to have a crush: butterflies, daydreams, and a longing to be with that person.

Director Susan Johnson falls nothing short of accurately portraying this whirlwind of emotion that comes with having a crush in high school. Lara Jean, as played effectively by Lana Condor, is representative of a typical high school girl with a crush, as the movie opens with her dreaming of herself in a field of flowers with her childhood crush, Josh. They are walking through the flowers and are just about to kiss when her little sister, Kitty, played by Anna Cathcart, hits her in the face with a pillow. The relationship and bond between little and big sister is established here and once again as realistic as ever. This sisterhood fuels the main plot of the whole movie, as Kitty, looking out for her sister, attempts to change Lara’s fantasies of being with her crushes into actuality by sending Lara’s love letters that she wrote to all her crushes to them. However, Lara has no idea that Kitty did this. Here the plot begins.

From Crush to Connection: The Heartwarming Nature of the Movie

The heartwarming nature of the movie is not just limited to the cute daydreams and the adorable act of a little sister. It continues in the relationship that Lara Jean inadvertently develops with another crush, Peter Kavinsky, played flawlessly by Noah Centineo. This relationship begins as an act or a fake relationship in order to make Peter’s ex jealous, but slowly this fake relationship develops into something more. Peter’s charm, kindness, and heart of gold will make a girl instantly fall in love with him and desire to date him in real life. He encaptures every quality of the “perfect” boyfriend defined by a hopeless romantic. Peter’s sweet gestures and humor will leave you wanting more.
Susan Johnson’s recreation of the novel, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before makes the characters in the novel come to life on screen so perfectly. Her accuracy and creativity highlighted all of the touching moments established in the novel that made millions of young adults fall in love with the story the first time and then once again in the movie. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is worth the watch due to its feel-good nature and its relatability. It is by far the best Netflix original produced.
