Communication Channel

Effective communication is essential to the success of any organization whether its government, the private section or non-profit, it is necessary to use the communication channel and the proper resources according to the audience. The efficiency of the communication process is put to the test in times of crisis. Depending on the culture of the organization, the process of communication can either be complicated or simplified. At either rate, the situation must be dealt with in the most efficient manner possible.

Unfortunately, not all organizations have a communication plan in place. In cases such as this, there is more of a sense of urgency to handle the crisis calmly and rationally. How an organization handles and recovers from the crisis completely depends on how well the communication plan is outlined for the organization and responsible parties.

In a crisis, there can be a lot of chaos and confusion, what to do and what to say and who gets what message. Any critical event that happens within organizations shows up as the ultimate unplanned event and an ultimate test for the leaders. In a time of crisis, conventional management practices are inadequate and ways of responding usually insufficient. Communication before, during and after a crisis or challenging event is a critical organizational function and failure to implement a strategy method can result in serious harm to stakeholders, losses for the organization which can lead to the end its very existence.

Reflecting on an event after a crisis is important for the organization to do. During the actual event, emotions are running high and tempers have the possibility to flare. It can be determined that during the crisis, most people are not thinking clearly as the crisis can prove to be detrimental to an organization. Depending on an organization, the executive and administrative staff can even be so focused on the outcome of the crisis, that they cannot focus on the current situation. During an emergency the company can be expected to speak to the media or send out some type of communication for their customers.

My crisis event was a change in leadership at Kelsey Elementary School. Some may look at a principal as just the leader of the whole school that can practically do what it is, he/she wants, to others there is a different perception. A principal can be looked at as a pillar in the community, a face to help shape young lives for their future endeavors. Changing counselors can often be hard as well, for certain students or faculty it is the level of trust that is formulated. Once a relationship is developed, trust will form and opening up will be easier to discuss issues that are occurring. New counselors would not have the same privilege, not at first.
