Apple and Renewable Energy
How it works
Apple did a great job in keeping us in the “Apple ecosystem”. In terms of all products and services work and sync incredibly well with each other. Which often leads us as a consumer to purchase their ever-growing products and innovations. It is undeniable that I am partially trapped in the Apple ecosystem. Since majority of my money is invested in their product, I personally like to see how one of the world’s largest IT company handling environmentally responsibility. And whether I am making the right decision buying their products as well as is the products worth buying after all.
For years, Apple was considering an environmental laggard. Most notably Greenpeace; with the critics over “founded toxic material in Apple products” which caused Apple to ranked bottom under “green electronic” from Greenpeace’s ranking.
But it all began in 2007 when Jobs pledge to not only be a leader in innovation but also to become an environmental leader. In 2009, Apple issues supplier responsibility report as their first initiative of corporate sustainable responsibility report.
The turnover starting from 2011 under Time cook revisioning, along with hiring Lisa Jackson positioned as vice president of environmental initiatives leading Apple’s corporate social responsibility since 2013.
As of today, Greenpeace has titled Apple as “the greenest tech company” in the world for the third year in a row
According to Apple’s 2018 environmental responsibility report, climate change, resources, and safer materials are the 3 following focuses are the most noteworthy part of Apple CSR performance:
Climate change (clean energy):
Its been a decade since Apple mains goal is to Reducing greenhouse gas emission. Measuring and comprehend carbon footprint is the best way to track down the usage. There are 5 areas to cover:
- Corporate facilities
- Renewable energy (solar + wind+ low-impact hydro+ biogas fuel cell)
From transitioning electricity to renewable energy. They build their own source of renewable energy to produce their own energy. This year they have proven that reaching 100 percent renewable energy from their operation is doable.
The renewable energy has reduced the emissions by 54 percent since 2011 and prevent co2 from entering the atmosphere as equivalent to taking 444,000 cars off the road each year.
- Energy efficiency
They have designed a way to use maximum energy efficiency on the facilities. The improvement includes upgrading to LED light, upgrading heating ventilation, air-conditioning (HVAC) system, lighting control and etc.
- Getting to work
Reducing carbon emission from a corporate employee’s vehicle. Where feasible, they enable work from home, offering coach bus program reducing single used of transpiration
- Manufacturing
They partner with a supplier helped them switch to renewable energy. Which is the most significate way to reduce manufacturing emission.
