How it works

Some people have a difficult time understanding gay marriage. Many have set views on their cosmology of how members of the same sex should or should not be together, legally. The cosmological idea of gay marriage offers a crisis and a critique within many families and governments. There are two cosmologies regarding gay marriage I would like to discuss as a contemporary cosmology crisis, the cosmology of only believing that there are only two genders and heterosexuality being the “correct” sexuality and the cosmology of being open to the idea of members of the same sex to get married as well as other types of genders, besides the conservative mindset of strictly male and female relationships.

Many people are prejudice against bisexual, lesbian, gay, or transgender people. These beliefs are based on a misunderstanding or established conservative religious views. According to the Family Research Council, there is evidence on how parenting by same-sex couples is “inadequate”. Also, the website claims, “same-sex marriage would only further undercut the procreative norm long associated with marriage insofar as it establishes that there is no necessary link between procreation and marriage” (Council). On the other hand, the opposite cosmology of accepting marrying the opposite sex can be due to the fact that “marriage is a basic right and an individual personal choice and the State should not interfere with same-gender couples who choose to marry” (Gourguechon).

These cosmologies are in crisis with each other, especially when government is involved. People with the cosmology advocating for legal gay marriage believe that gay marriage bans are discriminatory and unconstitutional. Same-sex couples should be able to experience the same opportunities as heterosexual couples do. People with the cosmology against legal gay marriage believe that traditional marriage is solely between a man and a woman. The only reason for marriage is for procreation. On June 26, 2015 the United States Supreme Court ruled that gat marriage is a right protected by the US Constitution throughout all 50 states. Before this ruling, same-sex marriage was legal in 37 states and banned in 13 states. These cosmologies are in conflict with each other when it comes to making legal decisions about gay people having the same rights as heterosexual people. For example, Vice President Mike Pence voted against the ENDA, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, and he even favored the military not allowing soldiers to identify as gay (Drabold). Although many share the same beliefs as Pence, people still continue to protest for gay rights. They continue to advocate for everyone to be treated with respect, dignity, and educate the public about all of the different LGBTQ resources out there.

Finally, my own assessment, or my “critique”, of the controversary of the legalization of gay marriage is that everyone should not only be able to love whoever they want, if all the appropriate measures are taken and there is no harm involved, but they should be treated with respect. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion, therefore if one is against gay marriage there is no need to impose emotional or physical harm on people who choose to be with the same sex, and vice versa. Being gay is not a choice and people do not decide who they are attracted to. The cosmologies regarding gay marriage are very different and are in crisis with each other, especially when it comes to making legal decisions in the government.
