How it works

“In these times people believe that the value of life depends on a person’s income rather then what they bring to the table. As a society, we worry if we’ll fit in or meet others expectations rather than being happy with ourselves. People need to start taking their lives serious there’s only one given to us and it cannot be taken for granted. While there are people fighting to keep their lives others are trying to find ways to end theirs. The value of life can never have a monetary amount, but life itself is priceless and is worth living to the brim. Many are quick to end it all when they believe they had enough, but the most painful events also bring the most valuable lessons of life. Without getting onto the other side of the problem you’ll never see the outcome. As a society, we need to grow and forgive but never forget where we started.

Many families have to worry about how the loss of one of their loved ones will affect them further in life not just emotionally but as well financially. Many families have to deal with losing a close family member or friend due to unexpected occurrences like the heartless terrorist attacks from September 11, 2001. According to author Kenneth Feinberg, writer of the article, “What Is The Value Of A Human Life?””, he had to manage the compensation funds for the victims of this incidence. Attorney Feinberg had the challenge of placing a value on human existence by the lifestyle people lived. In a statement made by Feinberg, he states that, “”Our system of justice has always been based upon this idea–that compensation for death should be directly related to the financial circumstances of each victim.”” Our system based people off what path they took rather what they brought, placing a stockbroker over a policeman. The law is set that there are no two lives that are worth the same, leaving the system with no place for growth and understanding the true meaning of human being entity. Instead of allowing the families to be able to grieve, they are forced to accept the shocking fact that their loved ones all have a certain price tag under their status.

On the other hand, families should be seen differently compared to single individuals, no matter what job status an individual had. A family with three kids should be able to receive more than a single individual who only had to watch over themselves. Feinberg’s idea that “”[I]t would make more sense for Congress to provide the same amount of public compensation to each and every victim,”” can be disagreed with on the simple fact that each person is valued differently. Families with children have more expenses rather than married couples with no children to look after. For example, housing, medical cost, as well as just providing simply needs for their family to be able to survive off. Most of the time that a single individual is given the same amount of compensation as a family, it leads to unnecessary purchases rather than a family who is in need with larger necessities and struggles to just get by.

We take some of the simplest things in life for granted, instead of being filled with gratitude for what others may not have. For instance, many people don’t appreciate having a roof over their head, not having to worry where their next meal is coming from, and simply having good health. According to Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios states in his commencement address that he once also hit rock bottom but it brought the best he could ever think of into this life. He expressed his point of view on life that, “”[A]ll external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.” Go by the beat of your own drum, don’t try to live someone else’s expectations. People shouldn’t feel pressured to live a life that is not there’s. It’s not your destiny if you’re not happy with it.

Furthermore, Job states, “”I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. [B]ut I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.”” Job had many reasons to call quits and fall to everyone’s standards to where they believed he stood. Yet he manages to beat all odds and turned a failing experience to one of the best things that happened in his life. Without Job’s failure, he wouldn’t have been able to start new companies like NeXT and Pixar. He later was able to redeem himself with Apple and help expand the company to its fullest potential after bettering himself first. A famous quote made by Rick Maksian implies that “”Life will always throw you curves. Just keep fouling them off. The right pitch will come, but when it does, be prepared to run the bases.”” Proves that life isn’t an easy road but you can’t allow yourself to drive off and try to take the shortcut just to get there sooner.

Many people don’t cherish life until precious time is taken away suddenly. An example of this would be Roger Ebert, Ebert battled with thyroid cancer leaving him with a different mindset. His life before was just focused on his work rather seeing life’s true value. In his interview with Chris Jones, “”Roger Ebert: The Essential Man””, he states that, “”[A]t the end of it all, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do. To make others less happy is a crime. To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts. We must try to contribute joy to the world…I didn’t always know this, and am happy I lived long enough to find it out.”” Ebert’s medical condition after a near-death experience allowed him to see his point of view of life. He learned how to go around his condition to live his life to the fullest.

Life’s value can be interpreted into different meanings, either have to decide if someone’s life is worth more than someone else’s or simply having to almost face death. Steve Job and Roger Ebert proved that life isn’t always easy, but what’s a story without reasoning. We are only given one life and we should be able to live it to the fullest without ‘what ifs’. As a society, we need to start understanding that our goals or dreams aren’t simply just given to us rather we have to work to get where we’ll be satisfied with our position. It’s easier to call quits but our hardest times bring the best lessons in life. We should all be able to live our lives thankfully for what has been given to us. Our hardest times in life are secretly just a blessing in disguise.”
