Role of Abraham Lincoln in Civil War

Abraham Lincoln the 16th president of the United States, took office on March 14, 1861, but was assassinated April 15, 1865. Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809, and he lived neared Hodgenville, KY. Abraham was a hardworking person and he was a self-taught farm boy, having no formal education. Abraham had an older sister called Sarah and a younger brother but he died in infancy. His mother was Nacy Hanks and his father, Thomas Lincoln. Abraham mother died due to milk sickness, caused by drinking milk from a cow that ate some poison herbs.

(Abraham). Abraham Lincoln’s accomplishments are that he played an important role in American history during the Civil War.

Because his heroic efforts helped preserve the union, and he played the key role in the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, which ended slavery in America. Then he signed the first of the Homestead Acts, allowing poor people to get land at little or no cost. Abraham Lincoln has established the United States Department of Agriculture for developing and executing federal government policy on farming, agriculture, forestry, and food. Abraham signed the Morrill Land – Grant Act which led to the creation of numerous universities. This act allowed the creation of colleges on the condition that the proposed institutions would teach military tactics as well as engineering and agriculture. He was also behind the progressive nature of income tax in the US on July 1, 1862.

Lincoln signed the Revenue Act of 1862, the system where taxpayers were separated into multiple categories according to their incomes. The main thing that Abraham did that changed that. He abolished slavery in the US on January 1, 1863, by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation which started the procedure for freeing the slaves in America. It was issued during the American Civil War, and it also allowed the black soldiers to fight for the Union against the Confederacy. (Lincoln). Mary Ann Todd, she met Lincoln when he was still an upcoming lawyer and politician, and their relationship was on and off back then but in November of 1842, they finally, got married she Abraham Lincoln’s wife. Mary gave birth to four boys and only one of them could live up to adulthood. The first son was Robert Todd Lincoln he was born on August 1, 1843, the only son of their family who made it into the 20th century, but he died on July 26, 1926, by heart failure.

Lincoln relationship with his first son was a distance relationship even though Abraham was proud of Robert, Robert admired his father and was cried at his deathbed. The next son was, Edward Baker Lincoln was a sweet little boy that didn’t even make it to his 4th birthday by consumption which means faced night sweats and chills and coughing. The third son, William Wallace Lincoln, was born on December 21, 1850. William was named after his mother’s brother-in-law, Dr. William Wallace, and William died at age 11 on February 20, 1862. (“Family.”). Mary Todd Lincoln after her husband’s assassination she became a laughingstock despite her mental health and Mary had a bipolar disorder. She was seen as an improper woman because the woman in her era was known to focus on home, not to seek attention but Mary loved the spotlight and loved to be in public. When her husband died she showed no grief or emotion because of her other two sons who have also died, also she didn’t attend Lincoln’s funeral.

Andrew Johnson was the new president, he didn’t sent Mary a letter or note of sympathy after Lincoln’s assassination and so she got disturbed that the new president didn’t send a letter of sympathy. Mary accused of Johnson had told Wilkes Booth to kill her husband and finally, she left the white house and settled down in a hotel in Chicago. Mary would buy clothing using given money by the Congress with the balance of Lincolns 25,000 per year salary, and she would use the money for her own use and she would as goo in debt with the shopkeepers. Finally, Mary died in 1182 at the age of 63. (Mary).

Lincoln assassination happened in Ford’s theater in Washinton, D.C, on the evening of April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth which he is a famous well know actor and was a supporter of slavery. John was handsome with his curly raven hair and quite popular around the female, and he was plotting against Lincoln in 1861 which was to kidnap him before he could become to be president. His plans were ruined because nobody would agree to his plans but nobody accused him to the authorities for making an anti-government statement. 1862, he got arrested because the authorities have heard rumors of other people and so he was arrested in St. Louis taken before the city’s provost marshal for making plots against the president.

Also, he was performing in The Marble Heart on the stage a Fords Theater in Washington, which Abraham Lincoln’s was watching. So he was let free before the two performances that happened that day, and he shot Abraham Lincoln with a small gun while the audience was laughing during the performance so the sound can kinda blend in with the crowd laughing or cheering. (“Booths’). Would Abraham Lincoln like Winchester? Well to start off in Winchester its a wonderful place with no discrimination and no slavery like back then in the 1900’s.

Winchester has a downtown which you can walk and enjoy the things around you, and one of the places that I think that Abraham Lincoln would like is The Handley Libary because it said that “when Abraham was a child he loves to read” and so I think that a library would fascinate him. (Abraham Lincoln). And today in 2018, for Abraham Lincoln he would woder who is the president in today’s year, and he would be really curious about how the world became to what it is right now and wonder how the government runs in 2018. Winchester will definitely say “I am a slow walker, but I never walk back”. (Top).
