Racism is Wrong which should be Stopped
How it works
Racism is a clear reality in our nation that affects all walks of life. Although, racism continues to shatter and destroy lives around the nation. Racial discrimination is a burden on people's lives because of the harsh human judgment that has been placed upon color and how that judgment can affect other? lives. The presence of discrimination continues throughout human life to healthcare, educational services, employment opportunities, the criminal justice system, and media reprrsentation. My main focus today is the criminal justice system.
My goal is by the end of this speech to persuade you that racism is wrong and that we call all put an end to it.
Whether you believe it or not, racism still occurs today. Some forms of racism you see today are things such as racist remarks or actions from our law enforcement towards ethnic groups, experiencing racism yourself first-hand, and even hearing racist comments from our law enforcement that are supposed to serve and protect us.Frank Jude was a 26 year old black male leaving a party in Milwaukee. After he exited, he had the unfortunate luck to run into four off-duty officers. The officers attacked Jude and his friend claiming that they had stolen one of the officer’s wallets, containing his badge.. Jude was repeatedly punched, kicked, and stabbed in the ears with a pen. The local courts acquitted the officers of their crime. It took a federal court to convict these men,yet they only managed to get three of them for their part in the injustice..My main focus is not just on African Americans, since 9/11 there has been racial remarks and Muslims have been discriminated against for the terrorist attack. This is not new for america to act this way. Many FBI agents and other criminal justice agencies decided to take upon themselves that the qualifying standard for being associated was faith. They gathered hundreds of Muslims, They have arrested and detained them on the suspicion of association. An assumption that was based entirely around a common faith that Muslims believe. Many weren’t even treated as witness. There was no attempt at securing their testimony as such.
Racial discrimination is a problem affecting the justice system today because it affects how one's trial can be based and built up on bias from judges or the jury.for example, The Case of Marcus Robinson.A group of former prosecutors brought together by The Constitution Project submitted an amicus brief to the NC Supreme Court asking the Court to provide a solution for the government’s racially discriminatory conduct in four different cases.Robinson was convicted of robbery and murder then sentenced to death in NC. Years after his conviction, North Carolina passed a legislation. The Racial Justice Act allowed those sentenced to death to challenge the legality of their sentence only if they could prove that systemic racial discrimination was the reason a death sentence was sought or imposed in their geographic area.
In that case the defendant would have to show clear evidence of racial discrimination in his or her individual case, which is a very high burden to clear, so the Racial Justice Act made it more feasible that a defendant could meet the burden of proof necessary to demonstrate discrimination U.S. prisons and racial profiling, are a big time factor into racial discrimination. There has been an issue with African Americans being in solitary confinement while white males are not held accountable for their crimes for .There was a study that was conducted and black male prisoners made up 40 percent of the total prison population in those 43 jurisdictions, but constituted 45 percent of the “restricted housing population,” another way to describe those in solitary confinement. In 31 of the 43, the percentage of black men who spent time in solitary wasn’t proportional to their slice of the general population. it was greater.
Latinos were also disproportionately represented in solitary: On the whole, 21 percent of inmates in confinement were Latino, even though this group constituted only 20 percent of the total population. Overall, in 22 of the 43 jurisdictions, Latinos were overrepresented in relation to their general-population numbers. In 2014, African Americans constituted 2.3 million, or 34%, of the total 6.8 million correctional population.African Americans are incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites. The imprisonment rate for African American women is twice that of white women. Nationwide, African American children represent 32% of children who are arrested, 42% of children who are detained, and 52% of children whose cases are judicially waived to criminal court.
The question to ask now is, "Do people feel racism is okay? Is it all right for someone to judge based on their skin color, when someone’s color has nothing to do with the person himself or herself? There are ways to help prevent racism in the community. you can join organizations dealing with issues of racism and human rights. There is a day for International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination every March 21st. This is a day that you're community can develop a policy statement against all forms of racism..The reality of living in a perfect world is a statement that is far from Reality is, there will always be some racial discrimination. That does not mean there is nothing you can do to help. Every act against racism goes a long way.
