Juan Ponce De Leon
Juan’s parents were nobles. Luis Ponce de Leon was his father and his mother was Leonor de Figueroa. Juan Ponce de Leon was born in Spain in 1474, more specifically Santervas de Campos in Spain. Growing up, his parents wanted him to be a squire to a Knight Commander named Don Pedro Nunez de Guzman. In turn for Juan’s help with tasks he needed done. Don Pedro helped teach Juan about military tactics and hunting , molding his future as a governor and a explorer.
People believe that Juan Ponce de Leon sailed with Christopher Columbus around the earth in 1493. Christopher Columbus discovered many new lands previously unknown to the east. Puerto Rico was one of these land discovered by Columbus. And after its discovery Juan Ponce de Leon was made the governor of Puerto Rico. And he later lost governorship and Christopher Columbus’s son Diego Columbus became governor after he gained ownership of Puerto Rico after his father’s death.
Juan Ponce de Leon is credited for discovering, naming and colonizing Florida. The expedition that led to the discovery of Florida included three ships, which were the Santa Maria de la Consolation, the Santiago, and the San Cristobal which arrived on April 3rd 1513. He named Florida ‘ La Florida” meaning The Flower because unlike different islands he had seen. Florida had lush green plants and beautiful flowers. He discovered it near Easter as well.
He is said to be the first european in The United States, Landing in Florida before Christopher Columbus landed in South America. He was knighted by the Spanish King and was given a Coat of Arms and was also made governor of Florida and was already the governor of Puerto Rico at one time.
Juan Ponce de Leon had two wives during his lifetime. His first wife was Leonor. Juan Ponce’s second wife was Juana de Pineda from Seville. He had three daughters with Leonor, Juana, Isabelle and Maria. He also had a son named Luis. He never had any children with his second wife. And the colony he had set up in Florida did not last very long. But he had a city named after him, which is a city named Ponce in Puerto Rico.
