Charles Babbage is known as the father of the computer, after coming up with the idea of an Analytical Engine in 1837. The Analytical Engine contained cohesive memory and a basic flow control. Even though Charles thought of this concept, the computer was never built while Babbage was alive. However, Henry Babbage, Charles' youngest son, also had an interest in technology. In 1910, Henry Babbage finalized a machine that could execute simple calculations. In 1991, a version of the Analytical Engine was created in the London Science Museum. Charles is known as the father of the computer because of his revolutionary concepts. Even though he did not complete these ideas in his lifetime, he is still responsible for the idea of a computer.

If there is something wrong with your computer you can "debug" it. The phrase debugging it comes from the Admiral Grace Hopper. One time, Hopper was on her computer and she found a moth! When the moth was taken out, she used the phrase debugging her computer. The official meaning of the word debug means "fixing a glitch".

Computers all come in different sizes and perform different functions. There are six different sizes of computers. The first one category is the supercomputer. Supercomputers became popular in the 1960s. Supercomputers are the most powerful when it comes to speed and accuracy. They're the types of computers that can do trillions of tasks per second. Supercomputers are also for solving complex math problems. These computers are the largest of them all. They can be priced from $200,000 to $100 million. The next category is the Mainframe. These are fairly big computers and they're mainly for holding files. They are equally powerful; they can hold massive amounts of data. The third category is the minicomputers. They did control related functions, like assignments. These computers are almost extinct because of the popularity of the personal computer. The fourth category is the servers. They provide resources, functionality to the user, and services. The fifth category is the personal computers. These computers are the smallest, most used and the least expensive. They became popular in the 70s and 80s. They have a small memory and are used in a lot of households today. The last category is the embedded computer. These are not general installations; they are stand alone, electronic hardware. This type of hardware does repetitive assignments.

The internet is growing and changing in so many ways that you can't give all the credit to one person. Nikola Tesla is given credit for the internet because she thought of a "world wireless system" in the early 1900s. The internet is for accessing data online in the form of websites and hyperlinks. The internet was worked by many of scientists, way before any technology even existed. The original name of the Internet came in the late 1960s, it was ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). The internet has had a very bumpy path to get where it is today. In 1990, computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web as we know it today.

Computers have developed and changed over time. The first computer that was ever built is very different from the computers we are making today. This is a computer timeline from the history of our accomplishments to get to the technology we have today.

In 1936 the first computer was built.

In 1947 the transistor was invented by Bell Telephone Company.

In 1953 IBM came out with a computer machine.

In 1955 the first bank computers were invented.

In 1958 Jack and Robert invented the computer chip.

In 1963 Engelbart invented a computer mouse.

In 1969 the internet had the name of ARPANET.

In 1974-1977 companies came out with personal computers.

In 1975 Bill Gates and Paul Allen created Microsoft.

In 1989 Microsoft created a program with IBM.

In 1991 Tim Berners created the internet as we know it today.

In 1991 the first laptop was invented.

In 1996 an internet convention took place.

In 1996 people found out that you could use the internet from your phone.
