How it works

Nineteen years old pregnant. She lost her job, she was in debt, and her boyfriend left her. She became depressed. She did not want to have an abortion, but seemed like the only option. She could not support both of them. She made the appointment. Ten weeks into her pregnancy, she had a surgical abortion (Where Do I Even Start).

The anesthesia did not work, and she was conscious the whole time. She was in pain and hearing the machine did not make her anxiety about the procedure any better (Where Do I Even Start).

She told the doctor to stop, but she convinced herself she had to get it over with. After the procedure she felt relieved. Two, short days later, she felt pain in her cervix. The pain medicine was not stopping the it. She felt like this was her way of being punished for what she had done (Where Do I Even Start). To this day, she continues to ask God for forgiveness and knows she will never go through the process again (Where Do I Even Start).

A fetus is a life inside a woman’s womb. It is alive. Abortion is immoral. In 2017, there were approximately 879,000 abortions in the United States. Aborting babies is murder. The fetus can feel pain during the abortion process. If you choose to have a child out of wedlock you should take responsibility for your actions. Abortions cause psychological damage. Abortion is wrong and should not happen.

Abortion is murder. It is the “‘willful and unjustified killing of an unborn child’” (Does Having). A fetus is clearly human. Having this mindset, a fetus is human, should present the argument that fetuses have right to live life. If one is aborted they are being deprived of the value of his or her future. ‘“Every abortion ends the life of a whole, distinct, living human being, even if the baby is in her earliest part of life at only a few weeks old’” (Chretien). Life starts at conception. Humans are valuable in any virtue they are. Physical organisms come to be at conception.

Therefore, the natural way of life becomes valuable at conception. Regardless of what men say, God sees abortion as sin and unlawful (Does Having). Abortion is morally wrong, this is supported by passages from the Bible in Psalms 139:13-19 and Psalms 51:5. The passage from Psalms 139 talks about how those who are unborn are made from Him in the mother’s womb (Bible Gateway). The passage in Psalms 51 talks about how one are sinful at conception (Bible Gateway). These passages show the morality supporting the wrongness of abortion.

Unborn babies can feel their limbs being torn apart. Some doctors have said that babies can feel pain at 20 weeks. Researchers have proposed that babies at this age can feel pain more acutely than adults (Chretien). There are many different procedures in which the baby can feel pain. One of these procedures is “‘dilation and evacuation’”, which pulls the baby apart limb by limb (Chretien). The other procedure is by injecting digoxin into the womb. This causes the baby to have cardiac arrest. The unborn child can feel the needle that is piercing into their body (Chretien).

The rate of the unmarried women who have had abortions is six times as much as those who are married. In 2015, the percentage of unmarried women who have had abortions versus those who have not is 4 to 27 percent (U.S. Abortion Statistics). Women who are pregnant and who do not want to keep their child or cannot for any reason should not immediately resort to abortion. There are many options in which they can do rather than abort their baby, specifically adoption. Adoption is not the only other option.

One could allow a family member to raise the child, place the child in temporary foster care, or get support (MissMillmag). One who allows a family member to raise the child is very similar to placing the child in temporary foster care. This allows the mother, who may not be able to raise the child in the present, to get on her feet until she is ready to raise the baby. If one’s family does not support the pregnancy there are many other care providing services in the world. These centers can answer any questions, provide financial help, medical and educational support, etc (MissMillmag). Abortion should not be the immediate choice for unmarried women.

Abortion not only affects the unborn baby, but also the mother who aborted the child. Emotional effects are more common than physical effects (Emotional Side Effects). These side effects can range from regret to even depression. One of the many reasons women have side effects much like depression is due to their belief of whether or not the baby in the fetus is really a baby or only a baby when it is born. The women who believe it is a baby are more likely to have symptoms of depression (Emotional Side Effects).

Depression is not the only side effect of having an abortion, other side effects may include: eating disorders, anger, guilt, insomnia, or suicidal thoughts. Not everyone who aborted their child experiences emotional side effects (Emotional Side Effects). There are specific women who are more prone to carry this emotional baggage with them. These women may be religious, those who have been persuaded to have an abortion, those who have had experience with psychological disorders before, and those who do not receive support from their significant other (Emotional Side Effects).

An argument was made that one is not a human unless their body is at use or conscience. Those who stand by this argument might also say as a fetus we are not able to be valued a way someone who has already been living for years is valued. The circumstances are very rare when justifying an abortion. The only reasons one may have an abortion is if the individual was raped or the pregnancy is causing harm to the mother.

Many who abort their children learn to justify the reason behind it, much like how we are willing justify reasons for killing in self-defense circumstances. In 2004, 79 percent of women who had an abortion gave reasons for doing so (U.S. Abortion Statistics). These reasons ranged from victims of rape to not ready to have children. Statics show that 89 percent of all abortions happen within the first trimester, prior to the thirteenth week of pregnancy (U.S. Abortion Statistics).

In 2015, 34.2 percent of abortions occurred in six weeks or less, and 59 percent of women who had an abortion were between the ages of 20-29 years old. The same study showed black women are 3.5 times more likely to have an abortion than white women (U.S. Abortion Statistics). Defenders of abortion do not wish for those in comas to die. They realize these humans have potentiality or the capacity for higher mental functions. A fetus also has the potential for higher mental functions. They cannot possess these practices immediately, but they are still related to the criteria (Irimia).

The guilt this young lady feels is something that she will always carry with her. She will never be able to take it back. She will never know her child. Abortion is a serious issue in today’s world. There are states creating laws to make abortion legal. Abortion is murder, harmful for the fetus, and impacts the child, as well as the mother. “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him” Psalm 127:3.
