How it works

What is pollution? Pollution, as defined by Webster's dictionary, is "to make impure and to contaminate with man-made waste." Pollution has become a major threat to our world today. It is one of the toughest challenges we are facing. It may seem difficult to stop pollution, but the world can certainly reduce it with collective effort. The problem is, there seems to be a lot of talk with less action. Yes, there are various activist groups fighting against pollution, and even people who recycle and pick up trash on the streets are contributing significantly.

They may not realize the impact they are making, but a little sure does spread far.

Some initiatives are very successful while others aren't. Think about the tremendous positive impact it would have on our world if everyone stopped littering. Littering is one of the many small habits that amplify pollution problems. Multiple sources contribute to this, such as exhaust from cars and airplanes, factories, nuclear plants, and the burning of plastics and tires. The smoke and emissions from cars and factories especially have very detrimental effects on the environment. These chemicals not only cause health problems, but they also make the air look hazy and smell horrible.

In years past, levels of air, noise, and even visual pollution were less than they are today. We have more vehicles on the road now, leading to higher levels of pollution than before. Cars are probably the primary source of air pollution in cities today. They release toxic chemicals and gases into our atmosphere, cause a lot of noise (especially for those living near highways), and take up too much space.

Another type of pollution is water pollution. Animal waste, dead fish, and littering are some of the factors that lead to water pollution. Animal waste contaminates water bodies, causing unpleasant odor and destruction of underwater flora. Dead fish not only emit an unbearable smell but can also spread disease. It's up to us, the inhabitants of this world, to stop pollution and save our future.

Even actions at home contribute to pollution - when people spray perfumes to smell good, or use chemicals and herbicides to clean, they are adding to the contaminants in the air. These daily activities that we often overlook significantly contribute to environmental damage.

The situation is deteriorating by the day. Though people are aware of how harmful these practices are, they continue to contribute to the problem. At times, I question why we have developed such damaging instruments like cars and factories while being aware of their negative implications. However, it's undeniable that we've become heavily reliant on them. It's crucial that we make conscious efforts to halt pollution.
