The Symbolism of Power in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies

Will they make it home? When the boys landed on the island Ralph was the one to take charge, he was more responsible than anybody so he became the person that the other boys followed after. He tries to keep the boys civilized by creating rules similar to the ones at home, and was the only one who made finding a way home their top priority. After a while in my opinion Jack become jealous of Ralph and tried to take over but the smarter and loyal boys stuck with Ralph.

He was elected leader but Jack gave him a run for his money, he even tries to kill Ralph. Do you think the boys will survive?

Since the boys are on a deserted island alone with no adults things can and will get a little crazy, but things went from crazy to insane. Ralph is the one symbolic of order, civilization, and productive leadership in the novel. Most of the other boys are only concerned with having fun, and not working, while Ralph starts building huts and thinking of ways to increase their chances of being rescued. Due to this Ralph’s power and clout over the other boys are safe at the beginning of the novel. Ralph proves that he is a good leader by finding a way to use to the conch to help give everyone a voice, and make the rules. “S’right. It’s a shell! I seen one like that before. On someone’s back wall. A conch he called it. He used to blow it and then his mum would come. It’s ever so valuable” (15). He was also the one who told the boys that if they were going to survive they would need to hunt for food.

Jack and some of the boys became evil, but Ralph didn’t let that affect him and his will to get home. -his eyes proclaimed no devil . this quote talks about how Ralph isn’t the type of person to be evil. He was one of the only people to not go to far, for example when the boys killed Simon because they thought he was the beast. Ralph believed that at this point the only way to keep the boys civilized is to elect someone as chief so they can finally get rescued. Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things . This is Ralph trying to explain to them that there is no way they can survive without rules on the island.

Ralph shows logos because he is constantly trying to get the boys to do the right things by trying to persuade them to follow the rules. He also tries to persuade them to elect him as chief because in their eyes they have to do whatever he says, Ralph was eventually elected chief but that didn’t last for long. Jack didn’t care as much as Ralph did about getting home, He just cared about power. When Ralph was elected chief Jack didn’t like that, He wanted the power of being chief. “I ought to be chief,” said Jack with simple arrogance, “because I’m chapter chorister.
