Rabies is one such suggestion given the similarity of symptoms such as confusion hallucinations and hydrophobia. In 1996 a study conducted by Dr. R. Michael Benitez concluded that Poe’s symptoms and clinical presentation were consistent with rabies though there is no definitive proof to confirm this diagnosis. Other proposed conditions include diabetes heart disease and even brain tumors all of which could explain the erratic behavior and physical collapse Poe experienced.

Despite the myriad of theories one of the most compelling arguments is that Poe was simply the victim of a combination of factors that culminated in his demise. His fragile health exacerbated by years of stress depression and possible substance abuse likely made him susceptible to the harsh realities of 19th-century urban life. The lack of modern medical knowledge and the rudimentary healthcare available at the time would have further complicated his situation leading to a rapid decline that ultimately proved fatal.
