Terrorism and its Global Impact: Understanding the 9/11 Attacks

One of the worst days in recent memory was September 11, 2001. Not only did the terrorist attacks on this day claim hundreds of innocent lives, but they also had a profound impact on international relations, world politics, and the collective psyche of the American people. This article seeks to examine the 9/11 events, their immediate aftermath, and the long-lasting effects they had on both the US and the rest of the globe.

In New York City and Washington, D.C., the morning of September 11, 2001, began like any other.

But when two aircraft carrying terrorists from the radical organization al-Qaeda slammed into the North and South buildings of the World Trade Center in New York City, it soon became a day of horror and incredulity. Both skyscrapers fell in less than two hours, leaving behind enormous damage and many dead. A fourth hijacked aircraft, United Flight 93, crashed into a Pennsylvanian field as passengers tried to fight the hijackers, while a third hijacked aircraft slammed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. About 3,000 individuals in all, including nationals of more than 90 countries, lost their lives.

There was an initial period of panic, terror, and uncertainty after the assaults. Following the enactment of the Homeland Security Act of 2002, the USA PATRIOT Act—which increased the scope of government monitoring and investigation—and the Department of Homeland Security were established. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was established, and stringent screening procedures were implemented at airports, resulting in increased security measures for air travel.

9/11 changed views and alliances around the world. Article 5, which states that an assault on one member is an attack against all, was used by the NATO alliance for the first time in its existence. Increased international collaboration in information sharing and counterterrorism initiatives was another outcome of this incident. The Bush administration partially justified the 2003 invasion of Iraq as a reaction to the danger of terrorism, but it also contributed to the escalating tensions and conflicts in the Middle East.

9/11 has significant psychological effects on society as a whole. It made people feel more vulnerable, and it also brought about more scrutiny and, unfortunately, prejudice toward Muslim populations and others who are seen to be Middle Eastern or South Asian.
