How it works

Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy influenced a whole generation. You may ask how? Well, they both had authority and the right mindset. They used their knowledge to effect change in a society of which they were not proud. King constructed a speech that left a lasting impact on our nation for many years. His “I Have A Dream” speech addressed the issue of racial injustice which was rampant. He inspired many and gave them hope that the future would be improved.

The hope derived from King's address gave us a better outlook on life. Those who heard it firsthand were moved by the idea of no more racism and the realization of civil and economic rights.

King introduced a concept that would later be utilized in Robert F. Kennedy’s speech. When King stated, “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream,” he rejected acceptance of the difficult social structure in which we live. He was responding to the recent events of 1963 and the preceding decades. King recognized these shocking acts and decided to deliver a compelling speech. To many of those listening to his discourse, equality was not a word often manifested in real physical acts. It was talked about, but many of the events that took place in 1963 were brutal and cruel so equality was the last thing many would consider. He also employed figurative language, juxtaposing concepts like justice and a mighty stream.

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed - we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." King used his line, “I Have A Dream”, again to emphasize this part of his speech. He reminded us that we will and can live out the genuine meaning of the phrase “All Men Are Created Equal”. He helps us remember that we do not need constant reminders of this sacred phrase. He not only draws attention to our words but helps us recognize the truth we have all agreed to live by. When King tells us, “...we hold these truths to be self-evident…” he trusts we understand the profundity of his message, and that we have the power in our minds to use these words for our good.

King did not only inspire those who listened to his powerful speech but also those who decided to develop his thoughts further. For those who despaired after King’s passing, Kennedy provided guidance by reminding them that King would not have wanted them to suffer from his loss, but to use it as an opportunity to help society. The speeches of King and Kennedy impacted a generation of men, women, and children, whom we still admire today. Their words altered our outlook on life and encouraged us to create an improving society.
