How it works

Barack Hussein Obama II was born in state capital, Hawaii on August 04, 1961. His parents Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr. were an interracial couple and they didn't last long. His parents divorced when Obama was just 2 years old and his parents both remarried and had children. Obama doesn't have any biological siblings but he does have 8 half-siblings. Although Obama's dad wasn't really around, the two still wrote to each other until the early 1980s when Barack Obama Sr. died in a car accident.

During Obama's adolescence, he was one of three black students at his school and so he became aware of racism. He attended Punahou Academy and ended up graduating with honors in 1979. From there he went on to college. He studied in Occidental College for two years and then he transferred to Columbia University, where he received a degree in political science in 1983. He ended up going back to college in 1988. He attended Harvard Law School. During his time there, he managed to exceed expectations. He became a member of the firm of Sidley Austin as a summer associate. This is where he met Michelle Robinson, who was African American, and a lawyer who was assigned to be his advisor. Not long after, those two began dating. Later, Obama became the elected editor of the Harvard Law Review which was impressive due to his color. After graduation, he went to Chicago as an attorney of civil rights and began to work at the firm of Barnhill, Miner, and Galland. During this time he did a lot, he taught constitutional law in Chicago law school up to 2004 and he later wrote an autobiography.

Obama and Michelle were still dating during this time and they got married on October 3, 1992. Together they had two daughters; Malia and Sasha. Barack was successful to the point that he ran as a Democrat for a Senate seat and got elected in 1996. During his time as a senator, he did a lot for the poor and helped change laws that were able to help innocents. Obama created headlines once he declared his campaigning for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. He was in a tight battle with former first lady and then U.S. senator Hillary Clinton. On June 3, 2008, Obama became the Democratic Party's nominee after winning a sufficient number of pledged delegates. On November 4, 2008, Republican presidential nominee John McCain, was defeated by Barack Obama 52.9 percent to 45.7 percent, to win election as the 44th president of the United States. Obama became the first African-American to become president. On January 20, 2009, Obama's inauguration took place. During his first term, he managed to expand health care for children, provide legal protection for women seeking equal pay, he cut taxes for working families, he improved relations with Europe, China and Russia and so many other good things. One of his greatest achievements during that term was the killing of Osama Bin Laden.

In the 2012 election, Obama faced Republican opponent Mitt Romney and Romney's vice-presidential running mate, Paul Ryan. On November 6, 2012, Obama was elected for another four-year term as president by receiving nearly five million more votes than Romney and capturing more than 60 percent of the Electoral College. After the inauguration, Obama led the nation through many challenges such as the terrorist bombings of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. He struggled with Gun Control due to the Sandy Hook shooting and he also dealt with immigration. Many Republicans wanted the deportation of these illegal immigrants, while others considered the situation a humanitarian crisis.

Obama impacted society with his actions. He approved marriage equality, he spoke out about Gun Control and so many other things. Most importantly, he gave immigrants and their kids a chance on the American dream. He created DACA which allowed young immigrants to work in the United States. He made a positive impact on society by doing this because he gave them a goal in life.
