Rococo

Included in this light and airy pastoral scene are carved stone cherub statues, intricate details in fashion design- note ruffled collars, people gathered leisurely in an idyllic outdoor setting with swirling asymmetrical cloud formations, scrollwork on a statue, detailed leaf patterns of trees.

Italian Renaissance painting

A. Provide your explanation of the stylistic characteristics associated with the Italian Renaissance period here: The Renaissance Era, represented a rebirth of interest in liberal arts- sciences, from math to philosophy, astrology and astronomy to all arts media. It promoted knowledge available to all for the first time in recorded history as a result of the advent of the printing press. Subjects depicted were often of religious nature, although the era was characterized by a separation of man from church governing his thoughts. Italian renaissance painters were commissioned to do works such as Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, but also included the depth of emotion depicted in Leonardo DaVinci’s The Last Supper, and also by DaVinci, the infamous, Mona Lisa. This era ushered in the use of oil paint which proved both more flexible than previously widely used Tempera, which cracked more easily, and was not able through the addition of media such as oil or turpentine to alter the application of paint to better adjust for the play of light.

The detail of human anatomy and the morality of attackers vs. both the daughters and Moses are both displayed vividly, a piece of art that teaches- so relevant to this period. Perspective is also displayed, taking into account the precision of the attention to math and physical sciences, particularly valued during this rebirth.

Faces seem to have had a 2 dimensional flatness.

Provide your detailed and descriptive paragraph that specifically demonstrates how the stylistic characteristics associated with Flemish painting (Northern Renaissance) are present in your selected work of art: Evident in this painting are many of the attributes associated with Italian Renaissance painting, including depiction of an astronomer at work (touching on the beginning of the shift to genre painting (introducing a new concept of common folk in their natural, homelife, work scenarios, becoming acceptable artform matter). Demonstration of a more accurate play of light on objects both in the foreground and the background of the painting, characteristic of Italian renaissance painting adopted by the Flemish/Dutch. This painting, less than several others, doesn’t seem to struggle so much with perspective. But is shows connection to the importance of scientific advances of the time, as well as the human subject being unknown, except as the generic ‘astronomer.’ Note the cherubs on the column, the hourglass, the globe indicating acknowledgement that the world is no longer perceived as flat, the heavy velvet folds of his vestments and the play of light on each object, also, he is reading a printed text- a nod to the dynamic shift of the time education and knowledge accessible to common folk.

Mannerism

A. Provide your explanation of the stylistic characteristics associated with Mannerism here: Mannerism’s stylistic characteristics exaggerate the emphasis on proportion, balance and ideal beauty that the High Renaissance of Italian painting revered, offering a style that is characterized by an intellectual sophistication and suggests an appreciation for artificial qualities, not present in prior styles.

Baroque

A. Provide your explanation of the stylistic characteristics associated with the Baroque period here: The Baroque period influenced architecture, sculpture, music and painting. In paintings, it often used primary colors (red, blue and yellow) and frequently in close proximity to one another. The period’s characteristic focus on movement, emotion and drama expressed the societal turbulence and shifting evolution of the period 1600 to mid 18th century. Axes were slanted to left or to the right giving the distinct impression of movement and unpredictability in action or drama infused paintings, while the action was off-center. Asymmetry and clearly expressed emotion are characteristics of the time and artforms as well.

Provide your detailed and descriptive paragraph that specifically demonstrates how the stylistic characteristics associated with the Baroque period are present in your selected work of art: In this, Sacred and Profane Love painting by Giovanni Baglione, the drama of a fallen angel being chastised by another, more mature, angel wearing armour, while a human man lurks in the background, demonstrates the action, drama, emotion and the diagonal axes, all characteristic elements of Baroque composition. The very realistic features and natural facial expressions illustrate the implied moralistic considerations involved.

Although I liked several, the Birth of the Virgin caught my eye, mostly because of the architecture depicted. From a technical standpoint, I feel like the arches in the building are Baroque in style, yet this piece of the Renaissance era, pre-dates the Baroque period, so that’s a curiosity for future pursuit. The juxtaposition of the white of the structure to the extreme blue of the sky and the echo of both throughout the wardrobe of the subjects is aesthetically balanced and pleasing to the eye. The reliefs in the fascia depicting the stories of the bible above, Adam and Eve and the serpent, the coupling and the father with son are interesting motifs, considering the title of the painting, also, the scene doesn’t resemble a manger, with opulence seeming the name of the game here, reminiscent of the Mannerism style- but pre-dating that, as well. The many dichotomies of this work of art add interest and evoke a sense of wonder, while the clarity and definition, as well as the positive vibes imbued, make it among my favourites of the grouping provided by Artstor.
