How it works

Describe the story of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave in detail. Three prisoners chained in a cave and only the wall in front of them is visible. Behind their heads are fire and a walkway between them. They haven’t seen the world outside of the cave since they were born. One day one of the prisoners resist and leave the cave. Once he discovered the world outside of the cave, he has begun to understand the new world and realized that his former view of the reality was wrong.

He decided to return to the cave and inform the other prisoners his finding, and the story ends here. Describe a thought experiment in which we will call the prisoner who leaves the Cave “the philosopher.” Everyone else will be called “prisoners.”

Imagine that the philosopher returns to the cave and tries to convince the other prisoners to leave. An Enlightened prisoner tries to explain the real world and his experience about the outside of the cave; however, fellow prisoners do not believe him since he only knows what truth is. Your One Sentence Thesis: 1) State whether you think the philosopher will be successful at getting all or some of the other prisoners to leave the cave and 2) describe two specific Platonic arguments you think the philosopher would use to convince the others to leave.
