Duty, Honor, Country: the Military Definition of Duty

Duty, Honor, Country means to me that a soldier or even a citizen is loyal to their country and they work to provide for their family or themself and they are honorable for doing what they’re told when they’re told. In my opinion duty means to do everything you know your supposed to do and to do it successfully. The dictionary definition is a moral or legal obligation or a ask or action that someone is required to perform.

Another definition for duty is someone is engaged in or responsible for an assigned task or duty not allowed to take personal calls while on duty.

The military definition of duty is a person who is active duty is in the military full time. They work for the military full time, may live on a military base, and can be deployed at any time. Persons in the Reserve or National Guard are not full-time active duty military personnel, although they can be deployed at any time should the need arise. The Department of Defense (which is the agency that oversees every branch of the U.S. military) definition of active duty in the U.S. military is pretty straightforward. Active duty refers to full-time duty in the active military, including members of the Reserve Components on full-time training duty. Doing your duty is very important because if you’re not doing your duty then we could get invaded or we could lose some of our land territory or our democracy or our freedom.

Another military definition of duty is to fulfill your obligations. Doing your duty means more than carrying out your assigned tasks. Duty means being able to accomplish tasks as part of a team. The work of the U.S. Army is a complex combination of missions, tasks and responsibilities all in constant motion. Our work entails building one assignment onto another. You fulfill your obligations as a part of your unit every time you resist the temptation to take “shortcuts” that might undermine the integrity of the final product.
