How it works

An article on bullying and cyberbullying states, “45% of young people experience bullying before age 18.” People often turn to bullying others because they want to draw attention to themselves or try to fit in with other people. Bullying can be looked at in many ways such as what it is and where it comes from, homophobic bullying, and bullying in the workplace.

Bullying is a term being used more and more in the world today. Bullying includes intentionally harming someone over and over. This may include punching or hitting someone, spreading rumors about someone, teasing or taunting someone, or sexually touching someone (Jose et. Al., 2011). People who choose to bully others are often influenced by an opinion they have on a particular person or group of people (Orue et. Al., 2018). People are also influenced by their peers to bully a certain person. A term used to describe bullying would be objectification. Objectification is merely beating or tearing one down to the status of nothing but an object. “Where does it all begin?” one might ask. Studies show that children who are exposed to violent behavior at home are likely to portray violent behavior at school or other places (Orue et. Al., 2018).

Bullying, in general, has been a main focus for researchers even as far back as the 1970s. How one reacts to seeing someone being bullied is also a major issue in society. A person has three choices they can make when they see this happening: intervene and help the victim, stand by or join in with the person that is bullying someone, or not do anything at all. Research states that a person who chooses to help the victim is labeled as an “upstander” which comes from being an upstanding citizen in society by taking a stand against people who are treated unfairly. A person who chooses to stand by or join in with the person bullying is labeled as a “reinforcer”, and one who chooses to not do anything about the situation at all is labeled as a passive “bystander” (Datta et. Al, 2016). Research studies state that children who bully nonstop will often become a member of a gang, become involved in crimes, or even begin using some type of drug (Jose et. Al., 2011). If a person sees someone bullying or being bullied, they should try to put a stop to it, so we can stop the spread of bullying in the world today.

Homophobic bullying is a type of bullying that is being seen more and more in the world today. Research states that homophobic bullying is a form of bullying that targets individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, and it is largely being seen in schools (Orue et. Al., 2018). Children, especially teenagers, think that it is “cool” to show off in front of their friends by bullying someone just because of how they look, talk, or act. Research says that students who identify themselves as homosexual or are still questioning themselves sexually have stated that they are being teased more than heterosexual students are about their sexual orientation. The most common way homosexuals are bullied is verbally. People tend to call them names such as “gay”, but people also bully them by hitting, kicking, or spreading rumors about them. People choose to bully people who are homosexual because they see them as being different from them. Someone who views himself as homophobic and has not told anyone yet may see someone else who is homophobic being bullied and become scared or create this sense of fear in him to tell others that he is homophobic because he could potentially be bullied as well. Today, homophobic bullying is a problem in society that is tearing down people who think they have figured out who they really are or people who are still trying to find out who they are, which is why we should be more aware of it and try to put a stop to it.

Although bullying is mostly seen in schools among children, bullying can also be seen in the workplace. Employees that have access to a computer can communicate with each other and make fun of a certain person in the office without the person even knowing about it. Employees can also straight forward message the person and harass them making them feel extremely low about themselves and make them dread coming to work every day. Research states that workplace bullying also involves repeating offending, sabotaging, humiliating, or intimidating one because of an imbalance of power (Privitera & Campbell 2009). A person may choose to bully someone because they received a higher position than the other person competing for the same position. One may also choose to continuously sabotage a fellow employee’s work, so that person will get in trouble and possibly be fired. Bullying in the workplace can also have a negative effect on the other workers.

Research states that when other workers see these actions being repeated, it can cause them to lose their commitment or satisfaction with the workplace (Privitera & Campbell 2009). If other workers see these actions being repeated, they may choose to leave their job and go work somewhere else that does not allow this to happen. Bullying can affect others in the workplace by making them lose their concentration and not be able to get things done. Research states that communication between employees can be severely impacted by bullying in the workplace (Sauer 2018). For example, if this is happening in a hospital or doctor’s office, this could put the patients at severe risk because the doctor or nurse may not be in the right state of mind, and they may accidentally give the patient the wrong medicine. People who are being bullied in the workplace can be significantly affected by these actions. Research states that workplace bullying can negatively affect a worker’s physical health as well as their emotional well-being. It can also affect the person’s family. Future promotions can be damaged by this because the person chooses to leave “sick” so often to escape the bullying (Privitera & Campbell 2009). Employees who see these actions being repeated should try to intervene and stop them and if they cannot, they should go to their boss and tell them what has been happening in the office.

Bullying and its effects can have a major toll on people which is why we should become more aware of it. Not only parents but teens as well should try to put a stop to bullying if they see it happening. Everyone’s goal in life should be to strive to be an “upstander” and have a positive impact on the lives of others.
