History of Baseball

Baseball was created 179 years ago and ever since 1839, baseball has been one of the most popular sports in America. According to the Google dictionary the definition is “”a ball game played between two teams of nine on a field with diamond-shaped circuit of four bases.”” It is chiefly played in US, Canada, Latin America, and East Asia. Ever since 1839, baseball has included playoffs, equipment, and rules.

Playoffs

There are many steps necessary in winning the World Series.

Each team must win eleven or twelve games to win the World Series. First, the non-division winners with the two best records in each league play a one-game wild card playoff. The wild card winner then plays the division winner with the best regular season record in a best of five playoff series. The other two division winners in each league play each other in a best of five series called the American League Division Series or National League Division Series. The winners of the division series in each league play each other in a best of seven series called the American League Championship Series or National League Championship Series. The winners play each other in a best of seven game series called the World Series, and the winner of that series is the world champion.

Equipment

In the MLB (In other words major league baseball) lots of things are required to start a nine-inning baseball game. Every baseball field has different dimensions. Some are natural grass and some are turf. The fields are cared for by the groundskeeper for each team. There are nine separate defensive positions. Three outfielders, four infielders, a pitcher and a catcher. Each player wears a baseball glove while playing defense and it is typically made of leather. The catcher wears some extra gear for more protection. When batting, every player wears a helmet, most players wear batting gloves and swing a wooden bat.

Rules

The game of baseball has a set of rules that apply to every game. Once a batting order is made it can’t be changed throughout the game. Substitutions are allowed, but whoever goes in (the sub) takes the same spot as the substituted player. If the teams are tied at the end of nine innings, extra innings will played until there is a winner. Every time a batter walks up to the plate they get up to three strikes to put the ball in play. A strike is when a batter swings the bat and misses the ball, or a pitch that is either swung at or not that is in the strike zone. Three strikes and the batter is out. A batter is given a strike when they hit a ball out of play. When a ball is hit out of the field of play it is called a foul ball. Foul balls hit with two strikes aren’t strikeouts. Any pitch outside of the strike zone and not swung at is considered a ball. If the batter swings at a pitch outside of the strike zone is considered a strike. Four pitched balls out of the strike zone is considered a walk, and the batter is awarded first base.

Baseball contains a playoff season, equipment, and rules. The Major League Baseball playoff season begins when the regular season ends. The top performing regular season teams compete in the playoffs to find out which teams will advance to the World Series. There are many things that are needed in a MLB baseball game in order to play. Also, there is gear to protect the players. Lastly, baseball has rules in place to make sure that the game is played fairly and consistently between teams. Ask any fan of the game, baseball is awesome!
