Bill Gates, age sixty-three, was born on October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington. Gates is a well-known business leader, hero, technologist, and wealthy entrepreneur. Through his hard work, charity, and success, Gates has brought improvement to computer history. The largest computer company in the world was founded by Gates, the Microsoft Corporation.
Bill Gates grew up in an educated and middle class family. His family was hard working, supportive, and loving. His father, William Gates Senior, was an attorney in Washington. His mother, Mary, worked as a teacher and served on a board of a major bank in Seattle. Sometimes Bill would attend the board meetings with his mother. He had an older sister, Kristianne, and Libby, the youngest one. The children were always encouraged to be competitive and to do their best.
How it works
Gates enrolled at Lakeside School in 1967. Gates was introduced to his first computer at school and he loved it. He always learned very quickly and excelled in all subjects. Little did Gates know that his introduction would later bring him success. He met Paul Allen and became close friends at the age of thirteen, in 1968. Through this friendship, Gates was gained extensive knowledge about programming computers from Allen. Both boys launched the first software program for microcomputers. In 1973, Gates enrolled at Harvard University where his curriculum was computer science and math. In 1975, Gates became so interested in coding and ideas with computers he chose to leave Harvard and drop out.
After leaving Harvard, Gates and his friend Paul Allen had started to develop the first program for Micro-soft. By 1976, the company was growing and the name changed to Microsoft. Gates had become the founder of the Microsoft Foundation. This was a huge accomplishment for these men and they were ready to share their information with the public. Gates felt that this software and a computer should be in every household. In 1977, the Tandy Corporation hired Bill Gate’s and Paul Allen’s company to develop software. By 1979 Windows 1.0 was created. Gates had an eventful year in 1980. He wanted to develop an operating system so he made a contract with MITS. IBM (International Business Machines) was leading the computer industry at this time. IBM was interested in this new system. Before long, Gates had created MS-DOS and sold it to IBM. By 1983, around forty percent of computers were using Microsoft software. Gates moved his company to Redmond, Washington in 1986. His company made the stock market. This stock sold for twenty-dollars per share, then began to rise. This was another huge success! Gates had become a billionaire by the age of 32. By 1995, Windows 95 was created and set many new features and standards for this progressing operating system. This version created the cornerstone for all the future releases with Windows. In 2000, Steve Ballmer took over the role of Microsoft CEO. By this time, Gates was known as the richest man in the USA, with eighty-nine billion dollars in the bank. In 2014, Gates was no longer the chairman for Microsoft. He only served as an advisor. Gates left Microsoft in 2008, so he could focus on his goals through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Bill Gates married Melinda French, in Hawaii In 1994. They had three children, Rory, Jennifer and Phoebe. He and his wife have always supported each other and are both very knowledgeable. Gates and his wife settled the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. They have traveled all over the world and have continued to use their contributions to help others.
After 2008, Gates and his wife devoted most of their time to charity work. He is well aware of many global concerns. He was known for contributing around thirty-one billion from this foundation. This contribution was dedicated to disease prevention, vaccinations, reducing poverty and for education. In 2013, Gates helped India to become free from the disease polio. He was determined to improve global health issues in poor countries. He and his wife have traveled to many poor areas all over the world. He visited Africa to provide medical services and food. His efforts and wealth have continued to provide for those in need. Many places consider him a hero because he provided for them and has helped them when in need.
Bill Gates and all his works with Microsoft prove that he was very productive and will always continue to influence this industry. His loyalty and hard work to this business, has brought well known programs to our world that people still use today. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, Microsoft Power Point, Microsoft Word, and Excel are just to name a few. The Windows software has produced the backbone for future software.
Charles Babbage is known as the father of the computer, after coming up with the idea of an Analytical Engine in 1837. The Analytical Engine contained cohesive memory and a basic flow control. Even though Charles thought of this concept, the computer was never built while Babbage was alive. However, Henry Babbage, Charles’ youngest son, also had an interest in technology. In 1910, Henry Babbage finalized a machine that could execute simple calculations. In 1991, a version of the Analytical Engine was created in the London Science Museum. Charles is known as the father of the computer because of his revolutionary concepts. Even though he did not complete these ideas in his lifetime, he is still responsible for the idea of a computer.
If there is something wrong with your computer you can “debug” it. The phrase debugging it comes from the Admiral Grace Hopper. One time, Hopper was on her computer and she found a moth! When the moth was taken out, she used the phrase debugging her computer. The official meaning of the word debug means “fixing a glitch”.
Computers all come in different sizes and perform different functions. There are six different sizes of computers. The first one category is the supercomputer. Supercomputers became popular in the 1960s. Supercomputers are the most powerful when it comes to speed and accuracy. They’re the types of computers that can do trillions of tasks per second. Supercomputers are also for solving complex math problems. These computers are the largest of them all. They can be priced from $200,000 to $100 million. The next category is the Mainframe. These are fairly big computers and they’re mainly for holding files. They are equally powerful; they can hold massive amounts of data. The third category is the minicomputers. They did control related functions, like assignments. These computers are almost extinct because of the popularity of the personal computer. The fourth category is the servers. They provide resources, functionality to the user, and services. The fifth category is the personal computers. These computers are the smallest, most used and the least expensive. They became popular in the 70s and 80s. They have a small memory and are used in a lot of households today. The last category is the embedded computer. These are not general installations; they are stand alone, electronic hardware. This type of hardware does repetitive assignments.
The internet is growing and changing in so many ways that you can’t give all the credit to one person. Nikola Tesla is given credit for the internet because she thought of a “world wireless system” in the early 1900s. The internet is for accessing data online in the form of websites and hyperlinks. The internet was worked by many of scientists, way before any technology even existed. The original name of the Internet came in the late 1960s, it was ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). The internet has had a very bumpy path to get where it is today. In 1990, computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web as we know it today.
Computers have developed and changed over time. The first computer that was ever built is very different from the computers we are making today. This is a computer timeline from the history of our accomplishments to get to the technology we have today.
In 1936 the first computer was built.
In 1947 the transistor was invented by Bell Telephone Company.
In 1953 IBM came out with a computer machine.
In 1955 the first bank computers were invented.
In 1958 Jack and Robert invented the computer chip.
In 1963 Engelbart invented a computer mouse.
In 1969 the internet had the name of ARPANET.
In 1974-1977 companies came out with personal computers.
In 1975 Bill Gates and Paul Allen created Microsoft.
In 1989 Microsoft created a program with IBM.
In 1991 Tim Berners created the internet as we know it today.
In 1991 the first laptop was invented.
In 1996 an internet convention took place.
In 1996 people found out that you could use the internet from your phone.
Bill Gates plays a very important role in the evolvement of the internet and with the history of the computer. All of us rely on computers and the internet daily. Gates and many other innovators have changed the world with all their knowledge and contributions. He was dedicated com passionate and never gave up on his dreams that changed the world forever.
