How it works

Here I’m going to talk about Sonnet 116: “Let me not to the marriage of true minds” a beautiful. Poem written by famous English poet. I am quite impressed of this poem the way he describes true love and the type of metaphor he uses in this poem. It is very special and outbursts a strong emotion, what I believe had been inspired many hearts and minds in last few centuries. he got very far and clear about the nature of true love with all the aspects of life.

A poetic attempt by William Shakespeare to persuade the readers about the characteristics of a true love. I would like to go through all these 14 lines of this beautiful art-work “Sonnet 116 “and talk about it in my own words

In first for line shakesphere begins with the description on what love is not. While he examines what are not the characteristic of true love. (“let me not to the marriage of true minds / admit impediments, love is not love” (lines (1)(2) here he talks about the romantic love between man and women as I can guess since it was written in past. He uses marriage as an example. A union of two true and committed mind in personal relationship. he admits if those minds see the obstacles between them that is not a true love. (“which alters when it alteration finds, / or blends with remover to remove” (lines (3)(4)) he goes further that love does not change when circumstances change and it is firm and solid that can not bend during difficult time.

Second quadrant he emphasizes what are the characteristics of true love. Love is like light-house and a deep mark in the heart and mind of the lover that are fixed. Even with the storms it stands fearless like a light-house. (“o no! it is an ever -fixed mark, / that looks on tempests and is never shaken(lines (5)(6) ) Love is like a northern star which helps lost ship even though we can not calculate how far it is but, you can take it for granted and can reach the shore. (“it is the start to every wandering bark, / whose work’s unknown, although his height be taken.” (lines (7)(8).

Shakesspeare continues love does not care about time and beauty of the lover. People get old with time and looks may fade away. I have strong feeling with this metaphor he uses “love’s not time’s fool. Which straightly related to my personal life experience when we have to wait over two years to get along with my wife here in united states. But, time had no effects on our feelings. (“Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks / Within his bending sickle’s compass come: / love alters not with brief hours and weeks.” (lines (9) (10) (11)) Shakespeare addresses to people who believe in after life that love is not just bound to this life but, never ending. (“but bears it out even to the edge of doom” (line (12).

Finally, Shakespeare challenges his credibility. If anyone can prove him wrong about his idea of love. No human ever really loved, and he will never write about it. I am quite amazed the way how he wrapped up his work in a smart manner. (“if this to be error and upon me proved, / I never writ, nor no man ever loved.” (lines (13) (14).

I just lately come across this poem and it is profoundly simple with extraordinary metaphors. I grew up in an Indian culture where love marriage is kind of taboo. although, India’s Bollywood film industries always makes films on romantic and unconditional love. I see patterns in this work and the movies I have watched and always inspired. When lovers from another states, different religions and culture bears out everything comes across them and either they have happy ending or sad the concept remains same as mentioned in this poem that love is fearless, unconditional, unchangeable and unbreakable. I can even generalize this to love for one’s children, parents and even to God. I am very grateful for this creation in human history.
