Examples of Censorship in Fahrenheit 451

The book “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury is about a firefighter named Guy Montag. Guy Montag does the opposite of what a firefighters does. He starts fires instead of putting them out. Books in Montag’s society are banned and if you are caught with a book it will be burned then you have to suffer a consequence. Instead of reading books their society spends most of their time watching television that is as big as the wall called the parlor walls.

It is not normal for strangers to talk to each other in their society and have meaningful conversations until Montag met a teenager she was a named Clarisse. She is a strange girl that opened Montag to a new way of thinking. She asked him about his job and what made him want to be a firefighter. One question Clarisse had that really made Montag think was “Are you happy” (Bradbury 10). This hit Montag deep down causing him to question his own life.

In Fahrenheit 451 homes that contain books would be burned down with everything inside. The book burning shows how the society lives without their own freedom of thought. Technology has taken over people’s lives.

Bradbury got his readers thinking after reading Fahrenheit 451 about the meaning behind the book. In the book Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury uses symbolism to get his point across to his readers about our society’s possible future. He uses symbolism from the book burning and the high use of technology.

Bradbury uses censorship on books to show his readers that he is against censorship of books. Fahrenheit 451 shows the effect of censorship on a community. Montag realized that something needed to be done about books being burned. He starts to steal and read the books he finds. He gains knowledge from reading his books. Bradbury tries to get the reader’s attention to see how our society will become if we allow technology to take control of our lives.

Censoring books in our society will negatively impact social relations between people while making people just dumber just like in Fahrenheit 451. In Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury shows what our future will look like if our future generations continue to over use technology instead of books. This view is not that wrong it’s likely this portrayed society could be the world we live in a couple centuries or decades.
