Police brutality started in the early 70s, due to the lack of equal rights for African Americans. Over the last past several years, it has left citizens wondering if policemen are doing their jobs or just looking for another murder case. Due to all the unnecessary shooting, rough treatment, and beating upon black people three radical black organizers created Black Lives Matter.

In the result of this injustice, African American lady, Korryn Gaines, a 23-year old woman, was pulled over with her two year old son and her daughter in the car with her for not having a tag on her vehicle. When the police approached her car she explained that her tag was taken because she was in the process of suing their police station. She then asked the policeman to ID himself before she would cooperate with anything he was telling her to do. The policeman began to tell her to get out of her car without having a reasonable explanations. Another policeman approached and reached into her car to turn off the engine. They took her keys back to the police car and ran her information through their database. Several officers arrived to the scene along with the chief of their police department who allowed her to Korryn leave. Numerous hours later, police arrived at Korryn house with a warrant for her arrest. As the police attempted to kick her door down, she sat on the floor with her son and a shotgun. Officers finally entered her home and opened fire shooting her son and killing Korryn.

Due to the killings of African Americans by police officers Black Lives Matter became a movement. It was formed to help black people gain right of fair treatment. The movement started with the use of the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social media after George Zimmerman shot and killed the African-American teen,Trayvon Martin, the preceding February 2013. The mission of Black Lives Matter is to campaign against violence and constant racism towards black people. Black Lives Matter provides an insight to the public of what is happening between police officers and the black community. It has a network of more than 40 chapters, people from every society work together to fight for black people’s equality.

All in all, black people accounted for 27 percent of police killing victims in 2017; even though, they made up just 13 percent of the population but police were only charged with a crime in 1 percent of cases. Police brutality is one of the many causes of death of black people. The Black Lives Matter movement will spread awareness until the number of casualties decrease. No specific race shouldn’t have to worry or suffer in fear of police brutality.
