The Prevalence of Social Media in Modern Life
Social media has been around for a while. It was always “nice to have,” but now it is a must-have for some. We use social media so much that it has become a part of our everyday life. The most popular that are in use today are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and many more; social media have all sorts of websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking with the world.
The Ups and Downs of Using Twitter
Twitter is an American online news and social networking service on which users post and interact with messages known as “tweets.” It is also used for entertainment of sports, politics, and everyday interests. Usually, when it happens in the world, it would most likely be on Twitter first. Facebook is where people can create profiles and share their information, such as business, promotions, quotes, or even photos about themselves.
Twitter has been around since March 2006. But it is just now becoming a mostly used source. It is a good social media source to use to a certain point, it is very informational, and it keeps you updated with things that go on in the society of today, and it is also very easy to promote your business, if any, and reach a large number of people quickly through tweets and retweets. “Twitter is meant not for friends and family but for people you want to communicate with, you can follow anyone, and anyone can follow you. There is none of the mutual agreeing to be friends like on Facebook, so if you want to follow 500 people you could” (Dave Parrack). Some people believe that Twitter is not a good source to use because it gets too addictive to people, friendships have been destroyed, and sometimes arguments on Twitter usually get heated quickly, it is also one of the number one apps for major gossiping, and most of all conversations on Twitter are desperately difficult to follow. Twitter is entertaining; people all over the world are posting funny videos and typing interesting tweets; it is just like blogs were back then.
The Negative Impacts of Twitter
Using the social climate, Twitter can adversely affect popular opinion and change knowledge and behavior with negative impacts. There are some people on Twitter who use social media to bully other people; while using Twitter understanding the context often diffuses a negative or confusing interaction, but there are times when further action, like the outcome of unfollowing or blocking someone, may be more effective.
“Many Twitter users follow an account only to quickly unfollow, thinking that they will get more followers for themselves and boost their follow-back rate. This artificial boosting method distracts from the importance of providing valuable content and engagement, and generally just cheapens the value of the platform” (John E. Lincoln). All of this about Twitter is why do not like to use Twitter; it is why there is too much drama and not enough positivity going around; people use the site to express their feelings and to uplift people as it should be used.
Facebook: A Platform for Connectivity
Facebook has been around since February 4, 2004, and it is a wonderful app to use to connect with friends and family. The news feed on Facebook is extremely personalized and catered toward a specific user experience. The feed is tailored to provide content that appeals to a specific user’s attention. Facebook has also launched its own ad service named “Facebook Marketplace” It is used for users to be able to sell items with their photos and descriptions tagged to a certain location for free. This site has become an in-one website that offers public and private messages to chat.
Facebook’s mission statement is that people use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, discover what is going on in the world, and share and express what matters most to them. This site can be important to use for its journalism, business, communication, and social relationships; by this media becoming an important way to obtain information about friends, family, and world events, the impact of the site is unquestionable.
