Caring for Animals

My name is Alyssa Miranda and I am from Corpus Christi, Texas. I grew up in a low-income household where both of my parents worked multiple jobs to make ends meet. For a while I had a difficult time with deciding on what I wanted my career to be. I came to the conclusion that I want to be a business owner and open up a pet resort. Being an animal lover, I immediately knew that Texas A&M University was the right school for me.

While doing some research, I found that Texas A&M University offers countless degrees of different varieties. Many of which include degrees in leadership and agriculture. I believe that with a degree in the University Studies-Leadership program, I will gain a better understanding on how to lead my team of future workers and overall successfully run my own business. This program will not only teach me the right skills on how to be an adequate business leader, but also the right skills in communication, persistency, and innovation. It will provide the accurate training I will entail in order to grow as a business leader.

The University Studies-Leadership program requires two minors as well. The first minor I have chosen to be the most effective and helpful is Youth Development. This minor will help me to develop the skills needed to communicate with families and young, as well as elderly couples. These individuals are going to want to trust me along with my team of workers to take excellent care of their pets. This minor will also train me to correctly plan and evaluate different methods when caring for these precious animals. Not only will I inherit the correct communication and leadership skills, I will also assimilate the proper ways to manage financial resources.

The second minor I have chosen to be exceedingly helpful to my career is Poultry Science. My pet resort will be located in a small town out in the country. The families and elderly couples that live in this town own dogs and cats as well as chickens, ducks, and geese. The purpose of my business is to provide the love and care for animals of families who need someone to watch after them while away for a job or simply on vacation. The types of animals I will be caring for are dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, and geese. This minor will provide me with the essential knowledge of poultry and the proper ways to carefully take care of these domesticated birds.

Overall, becoming part of the Aggie family has always been a dream of mine. To learn the traditions and become a part of one of the many different organizations that are provided is just exciting. This university is said to be the friendliest and comforting university in the nation, and I want to be a part of it. Gig ‘em!
