Career Goals to Become a Family Therapist

My name is Amanda Schill and I am applying to your master’s program in Marriage and Family Therapy for the Fall 2019 semester. I am currently a senior at Weber State University earning my undergraduate degree in Family Studies.

I discovered my strength in the business field back in high school. I learned that my business courses were exciting for me and came easily to me. I focused on taking business-related courses as my electives in high school and became the Sterling Scholar for Business and Marketing for my high school.

After high school, I started working in an entry level accounting and receptionist position for a Toyota dealership. I was enjoying my work but found that I didn’t get a strong intrinsic benefit from my work focused on accounting. I wasn’t excited and passionate about my work each day.

Discovering my strength and passion for working with children and families came a few years later. The Toyota dealership I worked for was sold and under new ownership, and I had the opportunity to start working for the National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC) in a data entry position. My mother provided child care in our home when I was a child, and I have always been very familiar with the field of early care and education. During high school, I would volunteer and help my mother at tables promoting the state and national family child care associations. It was when I started working at NAFCC that I learned the value of doing meaningful work. I found a passion for supporting children and families through the child care field. I realized through my work that my business strengths and passion for supporting children and families can come together.

I have chosen to apply to the University of Education to pursue a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy because I am passionate about supporting children and families on a community level. I know that family support is crucial to positive child outcomes, strong marriages, and strong communities. My academic and career goals revolve around my ambition to become a family therapist to support families through their most challenging times, helping them to come out stronger. Utah State University has a reputation for excellent programs in the field of education and human services, which is why it is my first choice in programs for my graduate studies.
