How it works

Many tend to enjoy being the leader as a result of gaining authority as well as popularity. However, it is not necessarily the fundamental concept of being a leader. A good leader is someone who inspires those weaker ones into obeying him/her. In the novel, “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, the book confirmed that aside from being a powerful or strong leader, those who demonstrate a better understanding of someone’s feeling makes one an outstanding leader. In a comparison of the two characters who became the chief, Ralph made the best leader because he is responsible, he respects everyone, and he prioritizes what’s suitable for the group.

As someone who is identified as the leader, Ralph’s title comes with great responsibilities. Throughout the novel, he’s gone through numerous obstacles that tested his ability to keep the safety, which is one of his responsibilities as the chief. “The storm broke. ‘Sit down!’, ‘Shut up!’, ‘Take the conch!’, ‘Sod you!’, ‘Shut up!’ Ralph shouted” (Golding, 68), this quote illustrates how he would react in a serious situation and how he would resolve it. Ralph behaved responsibly by spontaneously ordering the boys to stay silent and to sit down. Furthermore, it is a must in a group to have some rules to abide and the leader is expected to create them. Hence, Ralph created several laws for the boys as a result of their reckless actions, such as keeping the fire going as well as going to the rocks when taken short.

Ralph is a considerate character. He does not use his role to be superior or ahead of everyone, but instead, he treats everyone with respect. He even considered Piggy, who is known as an outsider, as his friend throughout novel. “‘And another thing. We can't have everybody talking at once. We'll have to have. 'Hands up' like at school.’ He held the conch before his face and glanced round the mouth. ‘Then I'll give him the conch’” (Golding, 25), this quote demonstrates how Ralph respects everyone. He is interested in hearing everyone’s comment or suggestions without being interrupted by the other boys, thus, he made the rule in order to keep the peace. Also, when the topic ‘Beastie’ came up, Ralph attempted to rebuke it as well as move on to another topic. Which reveals how caring and smart he is since he knew that that topic is scaring the littluns and the bigguns.
