The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was one of the most influential Mexican artists. Frida painted self portraits. She was inspired by Mexico’s well liked culture. She painted folk art, gender, race in the mexican society. Frida the well known artist in Mexico died on July 13, 1954.

Kahlo was born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1907. Frida went to National Preparatory School. She was one of the few females that went to the school. She joined the Young Communist League and the Mexican Communist party. Kahlo never considered herself a surrealist. She had a major exhibition at a gallery in New York and sold about half of 25 paintings.

In 1939 she moved to Paris for a while. She became friends with some artists and exhibited some of her paintings. Kahlo was commanded by the Mexican Government to make portraits of important women, but she did not finish the job due to the death of her father and some health problems. In 1953, she had her first independent show in Mexico. Despite being in the hospital, Kahlo still came to the show.

In 1925, Frida got into a accident with a friend. She had some fractures in her spine and pelvis. When she came home from the hospital she began to paint again and painted a person a portrait. The accident impacted her throughout her life. She would get some chronic health problems. She also had some serious injuries due to the accident.

Frida Kahlo got married with Diego Rivera in 1929. They met when he worked on a project at her high school. He praised her artwork. They lived in San Francisco then they moved to New York and Detroit. Rivera had an affair with Frida’s sister, she felt betrayed and almost cut off all of her hair. Kahlo wanted to have a baby but she had a miscarriage. Frida and Diego were divorced for a period of time and they remarried in 1940.

Frida Kahlo died on July 13, 1954. It is said that she could of died because of a pulmonary embolism or suicide. Frida spent nine months in the hospital due to gangrene on her right foot. She still painted while in the hospital. Kahlo’s leg was amputated in 1953 to stop the spread of gangrene. Frida was deeply depressed and was hospitalized because of a possible suicide attempt. Two months later she returned to the hospital because of bronchial pneumonia. She was still politically active. Her last appearance was on July 2 on a demonstration of U.S-back overthrow of the president of Guatemala Jacob Arbenz.
