Sex Education for Children and Adolescents
One in eight adolescent females will become pregnant before turning 20 (Reproductive health and teen pregnancy, 2017, para.1). Young adolescents need the information and the correct sources to help and protect themselves. Sex education is a class that teaches how to have safe intercourse, the responsibilities of having sex, birth control, puberty and many other topics related to sex ed. This is because that when they have no prior knowledge, they swung to media or even now and then sex entertainment to get information as their parents are not open enough about sex.
Without a doubt, sex education should be actualized in schools because it can lower teen pregnancy, it is better for the adolescents to get the right information about sex and sexual safety techniques from right sources (schools) as opposed to from the media and how it can also prevent them from getting diseases that can cause consequences.
It is almost normal to see a teenager pregnant in today’s society. As a matter of fact, people had asserted that sex education does not have any impact on the rate of young teen pregnancies. They felt that the data given from the education was not able to help teenagers and could not avoid teenage pregnancy. In any case, it is certainly being so that sex education can lower adolescents pregnancy and births. Although, due to the lack of sex education in schools, teenage pregnancy is a tremendous crisis here in the United States, causing teenage females to drop out. According to Marshall (2011), Among dropouts, 30 percent of girls cite pregnancy or parenthood as a key reason they left school (Marshall, 2011, para. 2). While teenage pregnancy frequently makes students drop out, being involved with school can lower occurrences of teen pregnancy.
Nowadays, adolescents could have strayed simply to such websites and unconsciously gotten wrong information about sex. It should be noticed that without really thinking about it, sex can be dangerous. Sex education programs need to be informed by evidence as well as include all the information and skills young people need to make healthy decisions (Honest Sex Education, 2019, para. 2). Therefore, it is relevant that sex education is actualized in schools so that young teens can get the information they need from the correct sources; to be specific, educators who are well educated about the subject. This is because that when adolescents are presented to the falsehood that sex is benign, their sexual activity increments as they have not enclosed sex education yet.
In fact, getting the correct information about sex can also lower the number of HIV, AIDS, and STDs cases among the adolescents. Teenagers can discover that one of the significant reasons for STDs is through sexual action. Sex education shows young adolescents about the prevention of HIV/AIDS and making their partner get tested for any transmitted diseases before experiencing any sexual action with them, not just one of them but both being tested. According to The Basics of HIV Prevention, HIV can also spread from a woman with HIV to her child during pregnancy, childbirth (also called labor and delivery), or breastfeeding. This spread of HIV is called mother-to-child transmission of HIV (The basics of HIV prevention, 2018, para. 4). By getting the correct information of current diseases, will delay teens being sexually active and preventing them from having unsafe sex.
Although some people may say that it is the parents job to teach their children about sex education however this makes students uncomfortable talking about the birds and bees with their parents. With teachers teaching sex at school can help students understand the concept of love. A downside of this idea is that students may not take the class seriously and fool around but it is important for them to obtain this information to prevent unsafe sex.
Children and adolescents need great and right information from the correct sources about sex, sexual connections and different other related issues so as to settle on a correct choice for their present and future. They have to comprehend about what can occur if there are confusions about sex. Sex education should treat sexual development as a normal, natural part of human development (What is sexual health education, n.d., para. 4). The actualization of sex education in schools will most likely prepare teens properly. Not just that, sex education brings advantages by lowering the rate of teen pregnancy, providing teenagers with useful information, and also protecting them from any harm. It will help students how sex can have an impact in their lives.
