Why Euthanasia should be Legalised

Did you know that the word euthanasia comes from Greek which means good death? However, Only 9 out of the 196 countries in the world have legalised euthanasia or assisted death, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Japan. – posted on Deccan Chronicle. These are all first world countries that value freedom and I strongly believe that Euthanasia should be extended to all other countries. There are 4 different types of euthanasia voluntary, involuntary, active and passive euthanasia. First, I will share a personal experience I had from watching a movie.

Second, patients must get a right to their last wish. Last but not least, if we do not assist a patient in euthanasia, they may commit suicide anyway. In my personal experience, the movie Whose Life Is It Anyways convinced me that Euthanasia should be. In the movie, Kenneth Harrison, an artist and sculptor, was suffering from a terrible injury which paralysed him from the neck down, making him quadriplegic.

However, when he wanted to be euthanized he not only had to get his doctor’s permission, he had to get the judge’s permission. Ken should have been euthanized since he was so depressed, he felt so angry with himself and he could never sleep. He was a an artist and sculptor but he couldn’t use his hands again so he felt his life was worthless. Passive euthanasia was his only choice as he couldn’t end his life other way without the use of his arms and legs. I really believe euthanasia should be legalised so that people don’t have to wait for a long time and go through a lot of emotional hassle. First, euthanasia is the patient’s choice. it’s their life and it’s not for someone else to control. However, It is also the doctor’s duty to fulfil the last wish of the patient, as they are the only one that truly understands the medical condition and situation. They are emotionally removed and can make an unbiased decision. Look at Fabiano Antoniani, an Italian DJ, who was blinded and tetraplegic after a car crash in 2014. Euthanasia was illegal in Italy so he had to have the permission from his government which took three exhausting years.

Finally he went to Switzerland to be euthanized. His last few words he posted on Facebook was F*** the boredom f*** the problems f*** the sickness. Wouldn’t you agree that. Moreover, if we do not assist a patient in euthanasia, they may commit suicide anyway. Suicide is often a very disturbing death and traumatic on family members. Imagine if your loved one found you overdosed, or had hung yourself? Even worse, your body may only be discovered days or weeks later. Furthermore, suicide can be extremely difficult to execute because patients may not have the energy to go through with it. This may lead to a failed suicide attempt that can further worsen their condition. Or they may feel the need to ask their family members or doctors for help, but this puts them at risk of imprisonment. Patients should be allowed to end their own life in a secure, peaceful and dignified way. In fact, the number of terminally ill patients that have decided to be euthanized is growing, 734 people ended their lives using Exit’s services in 2017, compared to 723 the year before. Exit has 110,391 members in German-speaking Switzerland and in Ticino, and 26,205 members in French-speaking Switzerland. according to Swissinfo.ch. Therefore… Surely euthanasia is truly a good death because it allows a patient to die with dignity and in peace? If you had suffering in so much pain due to incurable cancer, wouldn’t you prefer to die rather to carry on living in such a miserable life which there won’t be a turning point.

The last thing you would want to do is to knowing that if you die, it’s the easier way for everyone to cope with even if they lost someone who mean so much to them. There are several reasons why countries wouldn’t want to legalise euthanasia, but they have the rights to be heard before anyone make decision whether it should or should not be legal. For these reasons, governments across the world should legalise euthanasia before it gets too late or else they kill themselves. The amount of people wanting to get euthanized in Netherlands is increasing by 13%, even if people sign up to get it done, it will take a while for them to approve. Which is why euthanasia should be legalised in EVERY single country which isn’t religious so that people have the options to do it or not and they wouldn’t have to risk traveling to other country.
