How it works

How has history changed to make people with in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender community (LGBT) more accepted. In the past few years people with in the LGNT community have been more accepted than they have ever been. Most people with in the community still must fight for equal rights, but they also have been able to have more equal rights than ever before. People with in the LGBT community have overcome so much.

They have overcome bulling, harassment, and many other things.

LGBT have had more rights in the past years. On June 6, 2015 same-sex marriage was legalized in the United States. On June 26, 2017 same-sex adoption was legalized. A Supreme court revised Arkansas Supreme court ruling and made same-sex couples equal to opposite-sex couples in the insurance of birth certificates. In 2018. In 2017 a bill was passed called Senate Bill No. 179 making gender X has legalized in New York, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Washington D.C., Maine, Minnesota, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Dowd (2018)

In 2017 same-sex marriage laws were passed. On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court began to stop all state bans on same-sex marriage, legalized it in all fifty states, and required states to honor out-of-state same-sex marriage licenses in the case Obergefell v. Hodges. LGBT have been fighting for same-sex marriage since around 1970. In 1970 a same-sex couple applied for a marriage license and got denied and their case got sent to the supreme court. LGBT have been fighting for the right to get married for about 45 years.

LGBT have been protesting for the right to marry their loved ones and opposite-sex couples haven’t had to. Same-sex couples haven’t had to face any of the hard things that same-sex couples have had to. In the text, “Supreme Court Declares Same-Sex Marriage in all 50 States” written by Bill Chappell on June 26, 2015 the text talks about how same-sex couples must ask for the right to be seen equal and how the constitution has already granted them that. He states all 50 states in the U.S that the bill has been passed in. His article shows us the same-sex couples have had to fight for equal rights that they should already have. The text shows us how unfair it is that we make them must protest just to get married. Chappell, B (2015)

LGBT history has also changed by letting same-sex couples be able to adopt children. Because of several rulings by the Supreme Court of the United States, adoption laws varied widely in the united states. Some states granted full adoption rights to same-sex couples, while others banned it entirely or only allowed the partner in a same-sex relationship to adopt the biological child of the other partner.

In the text, “These Sates Want to Make LGBT Adoption as Hard as Possible” by Samantha Allen written April 24, 2018 talks about how ever since the supreme court has legalized same-sex adoption some states still make it hard for these parents to adopt. She states how three states are trying to use religious freedom to not let these parents adopt in their facilities. These states are Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado

These states don’t want to let same-sex couples adopt. They are trying to weigh anti-LGBT legislation that will allow religious-affiliated child placement agencies to turn away same-sex couples and they get to use religious freedom as a free pass to discriminate these parents. Allen (2018) These same-sex couples have been fighting for the right to adopt children for decades. Same-sex parents have been fighting for the right to have children since 1970 and they have just recently been able to adopt in 2013. Allen, S (2018)

Another way LGBT history has changed is more states in the U.S. are accepting gender x. Recently states such as California, Washington D.C, New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Washington. These states have recognized the third gender. People who identify as non-binary, genderfluid, androgynous, Bigender, and Agender know have legal options that make them feel more comfortable with themselves.

People who don’t identify as one of the two binary genders have had to fight to be recognized today. They have had to deal with discrimination and hate. LGBT have had to put up with harassment and other types of hate crimes. People within the LGBT community have had to live in fear of not being accepted by their friends and family. Some LGBT have been terrified of being kicked out of their homes and communities. In most states there are no laws in place to protect them.

Some people don’t want LGBT to have equal rights because they’re scared. Some people fear change. Change can be bad sometimes; in history we learn that not all change is necessarily good. For example, some people believe that same-sex couples shouldn't adopt children because they believe that the child should have a stable home with a mom and a dad. They use religion as an excuse to not let same sex couples adopt.

States that make it harder for same-sex couples to adopt are Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado. People in these states use freedom of religion as an excuse to not let same-sex couples adopt. The parents aren’t the only people being hurt in these situations but the children that are waiting for loving supporting homes. Some anti-LGBT people don’t want same-sex couples to get married because they don’t feel that they should because they can’t have kids, they believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, and they feel that the national divorce percentages would go up. Mooney, J (2018)

LGBT should be able to get married because they should have that right as basic humans and it’s not fair for us to take that away from them. In Looking for The Gulf Motel by Richerd Blanco he talks about how change can be bad but sometimes change can be for the better. Blanco, R (1968) LGBT should also be able to adopt because they should be able to give children safe, loving, and caring environment to grow up in. It’s not fair for us to take away they right for children to find families and it’s wrong to do so. In Blowing in the wind by Bob Dylan talks about how long it should take for us to realize that everyone should be treated equally. Dylan, B (1962)

LGBT have had to face hard times and still must fight to be treated equally but they have overcome a lot of amazing things. LGBT can get married, adopt children, and can identify as whatever gender they feel most comfortable as.
