Culture of Botswana and Famous Track and Field Athlets from Botswana

The Culture of Botswana is very diverse, considering that they have indigenous people and some very modern cities. Their culture has been influenced by Britain because, before their independence, Britain owned Botswana. But, just like it used to be, Botswana still uses cow ownership for wealth.

According to Google, there are 19 different ethnic groups in Botswana. Ranging from the native Tswana people to the Chinese People in Botswana. Let’s focus on the Tswana people for a moment. As of 2011, 85% of Botswana’s population belonged to the Tswana people.

The language spoken by Tswanan is Tswana. Tswana is spoken in a few other parts of Africa. All of the major tribes have a traditional Paramount Chief.

As I said earlier, Tswana is the language spoken by a good majority of Botswana. As well as Tswana, English is the other language spoken there. They use English in business matters, like writing something. They use Tswana for normal conversation. There are many other languages spoken in Botswana, like Bantu, which is another version of Tswana. Bantu is also spoken in Niger, Congo, and a good majority of other Africans.

One of their traditions is having totem poles to represent a person’s strong association with whatever animal is on the pole. One animal, the Aardvark, is very protected because it was used to keep the Xaniqwee people alive while they were traveling through a valley. Marriage used to be a tradition. All marriages were pre-arranged for quite a while. Now it’s just like us; you get to choose, and that is for everyone except for Baherero. Botswana has an interesting holiday they celebrate called Boxing day. It’s the day after Christmas. It is when everyone gets rid of all their boxes from their Christmas gifts.

The top three sports in Botswana are Cricket, Rugby, and Tennis. The most famous athletes from Botswana run Track and Field. Those athletes are Nijel Amos, Isaac Makwala, and Amantle Montsho. Nijel Amos won the Silver Medal in the 2012 London Olympics in the 800m race. A fun fact is Botswana’s football team is the Zebras. Other than Nijel’s Silver Medal, Botswana has not received any medals in the Olympics.

The religion of Botswana is mainly Christianity. Other denominations are Roman Catholic, Anglican, Zion, Lutheran, and Methodist Christian Church. Christianity was brought into Botswana by David Livingstone, who converted to Kgosi Sechele, who was the Chief of Bakwena at the time. The early tribe’s religion as a cult. They believed in Modimo as their Supreme Being and Creator.
In conclusion, Botswana is still doing the native things as well as developing and becoming independent. They are very interesting, considering that they write in English and speak Tswana. They participate in many sports, including tennis and their best track and field. Their main religion is Christianity, with many other dominant religions.
