Comparison of Father-Son Dynamics in ‘Death of a Salesman’ and ‘Fences’
How it works
"Does your son have to like you you for you to be a good father? Willy is a man who believes that the key to success is being well liked and he instills this in this sons even though this might not be true. Troy is a man who take care of his responsibilities and tries to keep his son from being him because he wants him to be a better man than he ever was. A fathers job is to raise their sons even through their indifferences Fathers should support their sons with their life choices even if they don't agree with them if they ever want to ever have a good relationship their sons.
Death of a salesman is the story of a struggling salesman named Willy Loman and what he goes through before killing himself.Willy has a good relationship with his son Biff at first but then it abruptly changes after a traumatizing incident. “You fake! You phony little fake! You fake” (Biff)pg 121. Biff was realizing willy everything that he had told and taught him up to this point in his life was a lie. Willy had always wanted for him and his sons to be at the top but he was trying to force something to happen that just wasn’t there. “I am not a leader of men , Willy, and neither of you.”(biff)pg 132. Biff wanted willy to get rid of his false beliefs because they were only going to continue to hurt him and the ones he loved like Biff.
Fences is a play about how troy does not want his son corey to be like him because he wants him to be better than him but the way he goes about this only drives them apart. Troy doesn't want his son to have to go through the same things he had to go through during his life.“I don't want him to be like me! I want him to move as far as he can get.”(troy)pg 39. Troy believes that the most important thing in life is handling your responsibilities no matter what it costs you “Not cause I like you! Cause it's my duty to take care of you. I owe a responsibility to you.”(troy)pg 38. Troy took care of his son corey without caring how they felt about each other because to him it was just another one of his responsibilities.
A death of a salesman and fences both were plays where the fathers had bad relationships with there sons because they wouldn't support their sons with what they really wanted to do with their lives. It was shown when willy told Biff that working on a farm wasn't a real job for a man but being a businessman was and how Troy told corey that he'd never make it anywhere playing football cause he was black and this ultimately caused bad father son relationships in both of these plays."
