How it works

Since media has been the largest source of entertainment is anything private? The public’s right to know versus the right to privacy, a topic that has an ongoing debate by the media itself, the subject of conversation has intensified since technology has become more and more advanced. Requested by ordinary citizens, celebrities, as well as incognito informers, privacy is asked to be respected by the members of media reporting. Frequently, journalists use methods that show indifference for others suffering to “report the story”.

Although, in other cases, it’s due to announcing “private” details that concealed agendas and acts of misconduct or criminality are revealed. The quantity of public interest involved is more essential in deciding regardless whether the media is justified in overruling privacy.

The news media, press, and journalists, play an important job of notifying the public of what they need to know. The media’s freedom of speech is principal to our society. Societies foremost source of information is free from control of any jurisdiction, and is consequently more likely to exhibit information in an unprejudiced fashion. Does the media really respect the right to privacy and allow the public to have the right to know?

A fundamental human right is the right to privacy. Privacy is a way for someone’s information to be free or hidden from the public eye and ear. Sometimes, what journalists see as information that is made public may be deemed as private by someone else. In the short story “Blues Ain’t No Mockin Bird” by the author Toni Cade Bombara, one of her characters quotes “I said to tell that man to get away from here with that camera”. In the story, there are two men whom are filming and harassing a family that obviously does not want to be filmed. With today’s society being technologically advanced, everyday there is a video that approaches social media of someone persecuting another. In the article “The Perfect Picture” the author,James Alexander Thom writes, “Human suffering has become a spectator sport”. The press harrasses and exposes any negativity and suffering they see to produce an “entertaining” story. Thom is accurate of his observation, day-to-day we see on the news someone or their family in agony, the press is quick to cover the story whatever it may be and whomever reads, hears,or sees judges and pryes into others lives.

Unfortunately, politicians even take advantage of family values and morality as a basis to be elected. They have choose to make their own issues and even their competitors issues a public matter rather than a private one. Celebrities get no privacy at all, this is what makes them go insane. “Justin Bieber lashes out at his fans, Shai LaBeouf has a meltdown, Selena Gomez pleads press to leave her alone”. These are all headlines of articles about celebrities and things they do wrong or are caught for. Lady Gaga wore meat dress in 2010 at the MTV awards to portray how she felt the press looks at celebrities. She was speaking out against the media. Privacy currently is depicted as a joke to the press and ordinary citizens. It is not respected.

Journalism struggles with the right to privacy aspect of things, but it has no problem reporting anything the public should have the right to know about. The public should be informed of any issues if it concerns their country, planet, and health. News, such as natural disasters, terrorist attacks, political uprisings, health issues, and sporting events are all necessities the public should be informed of. Political voting is public right to be able to choose whomever he or she wants to govern the country they live in. If it wasn’t for the press or storm radar specialists, no one would think to evacuate the area of Hawaii where the hurricane is is currently destroying. Sex trafficking is something the public has the right to be informed of. There are incidents in which women or children are poisoned or stolen for a sick craving, evil people have. All, over the internet now people are posting articles and information to help one another out to keep watch and stay safe.

Conclusion

Our society attaches itself with media and its timely updating that keeps the public notified of what is currently transpiring.Although, the privacy of an individual, ordinary or famous should be regarded. Lastly, journalists are responsible for keeping the public updated, where if that didn’t happen so much could go down hill. Journalists have the choice to use caution in dealing with whatever they report, and can take whichever course the public will most benefit from.
