How it works

When it comes to Racial inequality in the United States, different races are affected from social and disparities advantages. This may be the distribution of power, wealth, and life opportunities afforded to people based on their race or ethnicity, both historic and modern (google). For this to go unjustified is simply not okay and not fair. According to Wikipedia, “Racism is the belief in the superiority of one race over another, which often results in discrimination and prejudice towards people based on their race or ethnicity. The use of the term ‘racism’ does not easily fall under a single definition”. Slavery, on the other hand, is when a person is owned by an individual.

The owner can then control that individual’s life in many ways. These ways include when they work, when they eat, where they live, maybe even what they wear every day. Slavery lasted for hundreds of years in many countries, colonies until 1865 when president Lincoln prohibited it through the thirteenth amendment. The Civil War was fought to protect slavery, the United states and the confederate states of America were involved. The total outcome was eleven southern states in 1860/1861 forming another country. This essay will define the ethical concepts of natural law, natural rights, and the moral compass, and relate these concepts to the issue of racial justice by providing examples (expressed or implied) from the Lincoln (2012) movie. The movie relates to racial justice in the fact that Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery because it wasn’t right.

The concept of morality is pretty much what people believe to be what Is considered right and what is considered to be wrong. This is the same for everyone throughout the world. Natural law on the other hand, is the belief that you have the right to do as you please in life and what you want. This also goes for everyone throughout the world, we have a right to do what we want when we want to in our lives. When it comes to the movie “Lincoln”, Abraham Lincoln wanted to achieve the preservation of people’s natural rights through natural law. He Planned on doing this through natural reasoning. So natural rights and natural law go hand in hand in the movie.

When it comes to our moral compass, everyone has a different outlook. A persons outlook on certain behaviors and hoe they make decisions is how they feel internal about they are doing. For example, I believe you should treat people they way you would want to be treated, this is part of my moral compass and what I believe. Not everyone would agree with me but they have a different moral compass. In the movie Lincoln, Lincoln and Congressman Thaddeus Stevens from the Pennsylvania are talking about the moral compass and Lincoln says “A compass I learnt when I was surveying, it’ll… it’ll point you true north from where your standing, but it’s got no advice about the swamps, deserts and chasms that you’ll encounter along the way. If in pursuit of your destination, you plunge ahead heedless of obstacles, and achieve nothing more than to sink in a swamp, what’s the use of knowing true north?”

To my understanding these swamps, deserts and chasms are considered to be obstacles you’ll have to go through. I believe there is still racial bias existing within the criminal justice system today for sure. According to and online article posted by sentecingproject.org, “African Americans are more likely than white Americans to be arrested; once arrested, they are more likely to be convicted; and once convicted, and they are more likely to experience lengthy prison sentences.

African-American adults are 5.9 times as likely to be incarcerated than whites and Hispanics are 3.1 times as likely. As of 2001, one of every three black boys born in that year could expect to go to prison in his lifetime, as could one of every six Latinos—compared to one of every seventeen white boys.” (Sentencing.org) This related to the TED talk video because Bryan Stevenson states that there is a huge imbalance on racial disparities throughout the criminal justice system and courts. He talks about a county where one third of the black male population will be at some point incarcerated. I believe this is true to a certain extent but I also believe a person has control on breaking the law and not getting involved with people who take part in criminal activities.
